I believe you can use your current setup to shoot slugs and do it effectively with a full choke, depending on where you hunt. Without a rifled barrel, I would stick to under 100 yards. You will have to try a few differant types of slugs and see what you get out of them though. I havent shot slugs very often, but I have gotten varied accuracy out of them. A day at the range should be a priority before heading out.

As far as rifles, what kind of price range are you looking at and what kind of distances might you be shooting? If it is about 200 yards, I like a Marlin 336 30-30 with a scope(my eyes aint what they used to be). If you are thinking about longer range, there are a number of other good calibers. A little more info will get you some other suggestions.
