I am looking at buying either a Liberty or Winchester fire proof gun safe.
Does anyone have any experience, good or bad with either? Neverhome

Do a search on this one from a couple of weeks back. Double D posted a link to a guy that sells better safes on ebay - delivered - for much less $.

Don't buy a safe because it is cheep!
Buy from a local locksmith and buy quality. Usually a locksmith can sell you a quality gunsafe at a better price than a gunshop |

A fire "proof" gun safe does not exist. Fire "rated" safes do exist.
As a former Fire/Arson Investigator (ret.) I have seen a number of "fireproof" safes that have been involved in fires. Many times the contents were completely charred. Other times the contents were damaged but repairable. More often than not, items that are low in the safe, survive when items on the upper shelves do not. The key is the temperature/time rating of the safe. In a typical house fire external temperatures can reach up to 1500-1800 degrees, and can remain there 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on where the fire started, how fast it gets put out, how much combustibles are in the house, size of the house, and many other factors. There can be as much a 600 degrees of temperature difference between the floor and ceiling. All this affects how hot it gets within the safe. Here is a pretty good article about gun safes: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunsafes.html

I have a liberty and am very pleased with it. I think it has a fire rating of 45 min. Like the other post says get a quality one and have them deliver it.

Thanks to all of you for your posts. Sorrowful Jones that was an excellent and informative article. Thank you. Double D don't let people not taking your advice irk you. Most people want to see, touch and feel a product prior to buying it especially something as large and expensive as a safe. You were kind enough to let them in on a good deal, but in the end they have to be comfortable before they lay down cash.
I am going out tomorrow to look at gun safes at three different stores. When I pull the trigger I'll post what I have decided on. Thanks again to all. Neverhome |

Well, I went out today to three stores and looked at the Cannon, Browning, Winchester, Stack On and Cabela's which is the Liberty brand. I ended up buying Cabelas Signature SG25 safe which is the 27 gun model, Scurity level 21, with 60 minutes @ 1200 degrees. It has 6, 1.25" bolts on each side of the door and two on the top, the DX 90 Monster Mech cam over center, with anit pry door tabs. Comes with two lights and an electrical outlet. What I liked about it besides the above is that it is 11 ga steel, and comes with a door unit that holds handguns, papers, etc and has pouches for mags. I had to special order it as it came with an electric key pad which made me nervous. If the battery ever fails and there are none to be found around, or if and electromagnet pulse is unleased in a nuclear war, the safe will not open, so I ordered it with a locking key dial.
Thanks again for all of the advice. Neverhome ![]() |

$1700.00, The question was not can I afford to buy it, but can I afford not to? A lot of day time breakins have been happening around here for about a month now. Thieves are mostly taking guns and prescription medicen. I can't afford to lose either. All I have now is a metal security cabinet which has been OK for the last 25 years, but there was hardly any crime in this area then. I am retiring next year and thought it best to buy it while I am still employed.

60 min @ 1200. Do the specs give an INTERNAL temp? That's the important question. You will not regret getting the key dial. It is a bit slower but way more dependable. Congrats!
