I am seeking information concerning an H&R American Double Action revolver that belonged to my father-in-law dad. He believes that his father found it about 70 years ago and we are looking for when this revolver was made and how old it may be. The octagonal barrel is 2" long, the exterior of barrel is worn, but we believe that it is a .32 caliber. The only serial number we found on it was under the handgrip and looks like 5943. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a late 1st Model 4th Variation made between 1898 and 1904 (serial number can't help date these as they were batched) and was made to handle BLACK POWDER loads.
5 shooter would be a .38 S&W BP chambering, a 6 shooter would be a .32 S&W and .32 H&R Long BP chambering. I'd suggest NOT shooting it with modern ammo even if it checks out to be safe to fire.

Sinixon,
If yours is the "same" - then all I can say it should look like and ID the same as mmerc listed and pic above. Any more info on the gun, may provide a better idea for both of us. Thanks.
