What is a boxed primer?

I am looking for military surplus ammo and see some ads listing boxed primers.

Thank you.

There is Boxer and there is Berdan Primers. The Boxer primer has a single flash hole in the base of the primer, and is the type relodable by most American standard loading equipment. The Berdan primer has two flash holes offset from center, and it is not relodable with American equipment unless you have a special tool for removing the Berdan primers. The funny twist of history is that the Berdan primer is an American invention, but became most popular with the Europeans, whereas the Boxer primer was European, and became most popular in the US.

Go figure,
