Niiice! I love SMLEs. I've owned two, but had to sell them both I had a '43 SMLE No4 Mk1 made in Croydon that was a bit rough, but still shot very nicely. The second was a '44 Longbranch No4 Mk1* that was a tack driver. I recently found a BEAUTIFUL '41 Longbranch No4 Mk1* with the prewar adjustable sights. If I had a steady supply of .303 I'd have been all over that one.

You've got a Canadian '41 Longbranch ?
That was the first year of production for them and are getting somewhat rare.
They started production with the Mk1 ( bolt removal was done by a plunger type of catch , rear of the receiver ) then went to the Mk1* ( bolt removal is a cut-out of the bolt rail near the breech ) . Much the same thing when Savage / Stevens were making No4's for the cause.
Not pre-war though
Remember that the British Commonwealth was at war in '39 and Canada was very much part of the Commonwealth then.

I had a '44 Longbranch. I know that the British Empire was at war in Sept 39, by "prewar" I meant the style of rear sight, i.e., the flip up sight that was adjustable for range instead of the wartime production 300m/600m peep sight. Both the SMLEs I owned had the 300m/600m sight.

Ah...I see bjc ,
I thought you were refering to the Longbranch stamped Mk1 micro meter rearsight that was only issued to the '41 Longbranch Mk1 rifle.
'41 Savage Mk1 rifles also had Savage stamped Mk1 rearsights
...I've been looking for one of those...

If I had a prospect of steady .303, I'd have scooped up that 41 Longbranch. You have no idea how beautiful this rifle was and at a good price, too But then I'd have to sell a kidney on the black market to stock up any decent amount of .303
