Smile ASIAN CARP a new shotgun sport

While watching the news they showed these asian carp that are invading the Mississippi river they are almost to the Twin Cities here in Minnesota. The fish jump out of the water about 4 feet or so in the air as they chase along side the boat. It looks like an opportunity to get some trigger time in. How would one go about starting a new Carp shooting season.

I used to shot the suckers with my .22 when I lived in CA, lots of fun. They weren't jumping up in the air though, they were just swimming around being happy little carp, then BANG! They was fish food!

You will have to be sure to use non lead shotshells and firing zone restrictions could get crazy if you are in a navigable channel and X number of feet from a mooring place or habitation. This would be a good time for the Eagles to learn to catch their meals on the fly so to speak.

Just between you me and the neighbors dog the genie is out of the bottle and he isn't going back in. We are going to have to wait till nature adjusts and comes up with a balancing factor. Eventually there will be a population plateau and then they will go on the decline. I just hope it happens before all sport and commercial fishing are shot to hell and gone. In the meantime its like Zebra Mussels, boa constrictors, English Sparrow, Kudzu and Purple loosestrife. Once established they push out natives and ruin it for the indigenous wild life.

That being said I can see a specialized short barrel shotgun about 8 gauge using #3 shot out of 2 1/2" shotshells. Heavy enough to do damage, enough shot to make a goosd hit but limited enough in range to be safe on the water. Outfit bass boats for shooters, Set up tournament rules like every boat gets 3 laps on a prescribed course with x number of rounds available. Highest kill count wins a nice prize. Rendering plant has the contract to harvest the fish after each run and turns the fish into useful products.

Here in Indiana it's against the law to shoot on or across water ways. I saw a clip the other day of the Asian Carp in the Walbash River. They were jumping out of the water around a boat. This was near the power plant at Montezuma. That is also the place that Bald Eagle winter. Sounds like fun but I don't want to go to jail.

You forgot to include illegal aliens in your list of invasive species

I'd rather have the invasive species, it isn't illegal to kill them.

I've seen several shows on them. They actually have an electric wall so that they do not get into the Great Lakes. That would be disastrous. The locals up there have a contest where teams ride around in boats and you can only use bare hands or nets to catch them as they jump. Teams dress a Vikings etc. It is hilarious. They do this to try to keep population down a bit. The fish do not chase the boats but rather are startled by the sound of the approaching engine and jump. People have been injured riding down the river and getting hit in head with 8-15 lb carp or heavier.

I'ld think twice about using a gun of any kind for this purpose. The Mississippi is a Federal Waterway. I don't presume to know the laws, but it might get you some jail time. But I do know that the laws are changing, and not to our benifit!

I never thought of that DBM. I think there is a law on it though. Maybe it's with a rifle. It is legal to shoot them with a bow. I did that when I was younger and nimble.

There is a company making money by flying fresh caught Asian Carp to be eaten in China. It appears that the Chinese love to eat these fish, and that the ones caught in the USA are much bigger and better eating than those in China because our rivers are cleaner.

BINGO! Capitalism cures all evils.

When I was in college many years ago a bar in western New York right on Lake Erie got busted for having "Sheephead Hitting Contests" on the beach behind them.

I guess you tossed one up and swung a canoe paddle at it and they gave prizes for the longest hit.

Sounds like fun while it lasted.

Maybe that would work with the Carp?
