Default Sportsman 999 ammo

Recently picked up a 999 Sportsman. AE serial #(1968).
Have been shooting it quite a bit with HV ammo and it fires and functions perfectly. A friend of mine has told me that only standard velocity ammo should be used. Is this correct? Will someone give the the starting date that the HV ammo can be used as this isn't the last H&R that I plan to own. Thanks in advance. Shelby Chastain

Shelby,
The 1968 SPORTSMAN (if in safe shootable condition) can handle ANY .22 lr ammo you can squeeze into the cylinder bores. H&R began equipping the SPORTSMAN (and other models) to handle High Speed (Nitro/smokeless loads) .22 rf in around 1932-33.
One note: H&R recommended using ONLY .22 LONG RIFLE cartridges in their SPORTSMAN revolvers.

Jim
Here's one for you.
I know the high velocity stuff is ok, but, what about the hyper velocity ammo?
Personally, I don't plan to use it, but others may like to know if the Sportsman models are up to it,especially older ones.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim Jo -
I don't see why not - the hyper velocity is gained mostly by utilizing light weight bullets - 30, 32gr. Don't see why you couldn't use any of the "hypers" in the post WW2 pieces.
