OK guys and gals here's the plan. I'm considering getting involved in Ruger's rimfire matches (looks like a ton of fun and another reason to buy guns). I've narrowed the choices for the pistol to the MarkIII or the 22/45 target models and would really appreciate opinions. I will be outfitting the guns (both rifle and pistol ) with some kind of red dot optic and I could use help there too
Maybe Konus?Any and all opinions will be appreciated.

I've got the Markll competition and the Mark lll short fluted bull barrel and I like both but if I were going to suggest one I would say the Mark lll as it comes with the better trigger(once you remove the magazine safety, which is easy to do, you replace the hammer bushing with a Mark ll bushing and have a really nice trigger right out of the box).
I'm sure you will have a blast at the matches. Good luck. |

I love my MKIII!!! I think it balances better in the hand than the 22/45. My hands are rather large so it really depends on the fit and feel.

Airdale:
Lets see, an all steel gun (the Mark I, II, III) or the plastic framed plinker gun (the 22/45). I think the choice is obvious. I have owned several Ruger MK's and my favorite is the 5 1/2 inch bull barreled target model. My current one is the Mk II 678G Government Model but I think I am sorry I ever sold the 5 1/2 inch Bull barreled Target. As for a Red Dot mount, I believe the latest MK guns come pre-drilled for a rail that allows a Weaver mount. Most Red Dots come with weaver mounts. You only have to buy the rail which Ruger and others sell. As for which Red Dot, the Bullseye community really likes the Ultra Dot. I like the base one inch tube diameter model. It is very durable, works well, and is the most Red Dot for the least money: http://www.larrysguns.com/Products/U...ack__UD1B.aspx LDBennett Last edited by LDBennett; 09-23-2011 at 10:53 AM.. |

I also like the Mk III over the 22/45 because of the weight and feel. I'm not a big fan of plastic.
I have a Mk II Government Model that I've fitted with an ATN sight. That's a "reflex sight" with one lens, very bright, multiple reticles, and costs about $75. An excellent sight to use on a bright sunny day.

Here is what I wound up with and it is an AMAZING gun! Super accurate and feels great to boot.
22/45 MK-III Target Model Volquartsen: Exact Edge Extractor, SureStrike Firing Pin, Target hammer, Target sear, Target trigger w/ over-travel screw, return trigger plunger spring and polished plunger, V-Comp Compensator, Titanium Disconnecter. Mag disconnect removed using Sam's hammer bushing and I installed bpatza @ rimfirecentral.com's Loaded Chamber Indicator (LCI) Cover. Grips and Mag Bumpers by TechTeach @ rimfirecentral.com Dominic.Notaro@csinet.net Hammer bushing from Sam Lam @ rimfirecentral.com sg552.2@gmail.com Cocking Handle by Brian Alcaraz, bjtraz@swbell.net @ rimfirecentral.com I Throated her and polished the feed ramp too. The trigger is MUCH lighter and breaks nice and clean with NO creep and no over-travel. Once I adjusted the take-up as far as I could and still get reliable reset I am left with about 1/32" take-up before you feel resistance then she breaks like glass at maybe a pounds pressure! I doubt I will be making any changes to the setup from this point on other than a special set of grips I have coming! ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a total of only $258.43 in her not counting the original cost of the gun and Red Dot which was $350 so the total investment is $608.43 and well worth every penny to me! |

Thanks guys. LD what you suggest is pretty much where I'm ending up. Had a MKI years ago and it was the most accurate pistol I had. Thanks for the red dot info., I've never used one so any info helps. Spent the last couple of years getting set up with concealed carry and tactical stuff. Now it's time for some fun, less expensive shooting.

I own both. The MKIII is a far better quality pistol IMHO.
