Default Romanian ak47 (wasr10)

so i went down to a local gunshop and picked out a new ak. it came with two mags, and bayonette. The stock and grip on the front are not finished. So i was wondering how easy it is to stain and laquor (sp?) them since i am no wood worker. also any suggestions, comments, or info on mods or anything cool that you guys would like to share? also any info or recommendations would be much appretiated since i am new to ak 47s and rifles of this nature! thanks everybody

UTG quad rail is my first recommendation, they are pretty cheap and are of good quality and fit well, easy to install. will let you customize up front any way you want.

you can easily finish with whatever you like though, too easy.

lots of plastic furniture available if you want to just replace.

Found a nice scope mount (side mount) for $18 at a LGS, don't remember the brand off the top of my head but it's pretty decent. I've got a C-more reflex sight on mine, any red dot will work well or a scope if desired.

got a G-money grip up front, a tac light on the rail also up front off to one side.

extended mag release is pretty handy...

extended safety lever (has a nub that sticks out so you can manipulate it with your finger without moving your hand off the grip)

bike tube and grip tape on the pistol grip.

a nice sling.....

I've got 2 of the romanians, I love 'em. (well, loved them when they were $300, don't even know what they run now...)

too easy!

I'll take a picture of mine when I get a chance to show ya what I've got on mine for a better idea. But the rail and scope mount are the two biggest upgrades IMO. The safety lever is a huge plus for speed also.

Everyone has their own likes for these things but if you're wanting a nice 'tactical' style AK, there's tons of goodies to be had. Most are not too expensive compared to some other guns, even AR's.

You mean the wood is not sealed. just look at the utube for wood working or user iraqivetern they do show, how to refinished the wood. if the wood is cracked or real bad shape then don't bother.

Get out and shoot the gun first, then decide if you want to put any money into it, getting it "cool" looking is ok, just find out what you want to do before spending money on it and not likeing what you may end up with, buy more ammo is always good before prettying up the rifle itself.

A buddy of mine has one of these thats giving him all kind of problems. The last couple of times it's been fired it has left a damaged case in the chamber only partially extracted. The cases have to be driven out and have a deep gouge about a 1/4" abouve the rim. Disassembling the gun and dropping a fresh round into the chamber it goes in fully. The fired case will only enter the chamber as far as the gouge, and it pierces the primers. Measuring the case above the extractor groove and below the gouge it has expanded approximately .011" larger than an unfired round. The lug on the bolt is severely peened, as is the locking recess on the side of the receiver. The only ammo he has ever shot in it is Wolf brand steel case military style. Does anyone in the forum have any idea what is causing this to happen.

Hmm. Sounds like the first thing he needs to do is check the headspace. Some of what you describe sounds like an excessive headspace problem, although there may be some other issues involved too.

my wasr came with unfinished wood as well.

needs sanding, and then sealing with a product that is ok to used on oiled wood. some finishes will lift off of oiled wood.. but many minwax finishes are ok on oil finished woods.

depending on what kind of finish you want on the wood there are many options. i just made a set of grips for my 1911 and i sanded them down with 60-100-150-220-320 then i used wood finishing wax and polished them on a high speed buffer they turned out great. you could also use polyurethene if you looking for a high gloss finish

I know it's way late to respond to this post, but I'm curious about the handguards you mentioned with the vertical wooden grip.

The Romanian military AK variants (not necessarily the WASR type commercial variants) were fitted with a laminated handguard which had a rather crude vertical grip, as shown below. These came with the de-milled parts kits several years back. Is this what you are thinking of?
