Ruger 10/22 takedown

I'm thinking of buying a Ruger 10/22 takedown model. Any thoughts or concerns about this particular model?

I highly recommend one

I bought one for a truck gun and I don't intend to ever put a scope on it

they work great. When you re-assemble it, the instructions tell you to cycle the bolt a few times before loading and firing.
I guess to make sure everything is lined up correctly

it is everybit as accurate as any other of my 10-22s
I think the I will get a Williams rear peep site though. They mount on the reciever and are supposed to be awesome

The only thing I don't like about any of the Ruger 10-22 synthetic stocks is that there is not an easy way to mount a rear swivel mount


I actually took the buttstock cap off of mine and drilled a hole in the stock and when I threaded the swivel stud in, I built up the inside of the threads with JB Weld to give it a good strong mount


I think Ruger should put molded mounting points in those stocks like Marlin does.

but who am I for them to listen to?

what attracted me to this model is that it is relatively inexpensive and the takedown model would be easier to stow in a bug-out bag. I don't care for synthetic stocks, but you can't have everything.

I got my truck gun, a marlin 60 with woodgrain stock but I mainly carry a centerfire rifle in the vehicles. I dont know why people buy ruger .22's . I bought one about 5 years ago. It was a .22lr semi auto with clip and it jammed the 2nd shot that I shot with it and jammed just over and over again. I bought a brand new Marlin model 60 last week with a woodgrain stock, I now fired over 300+ rounds and not one single fail. Also it has the auto bolt hold which is good to have so you dont get the rifle dry fired. Good Luck on finding the right weapon.

Got one. Put a quick detach scope mount on it with a Tasco 3x9. It's in my truck right now. Wouldn't leave home without it. Returns to zero every time I put it together. Grandson has run probably 5,000 rounds through it with no problems. I use the Ruger 25 round mags with it. Flawless.

Just wondering, That's a good reason. When these first came out my buddies and I were thinking "geez that's pretty neat"....but as I thought about it, I wondered what I'd ever really do with it? I mean, I don't ever conceal my rifle, it's not any lighter, just shorter. Anyway, back to the question...I don't have one, but I have shot probably 10k rounds through my regular 10/22 and it's fantastically reliable and trouble free.

Was the clip you were using a Ruger or an after-market brand?

Also it could of been that I didnt clean it when I first shot it. Now I always clean my rifles and shotguns before I first use them.

The 10/22 Takedown is a pretty phenomenal system,
and should 'mate' solid and perfect for many years.
Those that have seen it know what I'm speaking of.
I have many manufacturers'.22's, and the 10/22 is as good as any.
But, there are lots of mods for the 10/22
Of course Volquartsen is probably the most well known, I prefer others
these days, although I do have Volquartsen.

I have been thinking of getting the take down 10-22 also. I don't really consider $300 for a .22 rifle to be all that inexpensive. There is a guy here (Athens, GA) that doesn't have a "store front" place of business that says he sells them for $280, which still ain't that cheap.

Speaking of a Marlin model 60, a few weeks ago, my sister and brother-in-law stopped by my house for one night. They were heading home to Florida from a visit to my nephew's home in SC. Well anyway, I had a Marlin Mod 60 that someone gave me about 25 years ago, which I had never fired. I gave that rifle to my brother-in-law the night that they visited. I am in Florida this weekend and I got to shoot that rifle yesterday. That thing is as accurate as any rifle I have ever shot. If I had known that before I gave it to him, I would have kept the thing.

Damn right, the bullet goes anywhere you want it to when your shooting a Marlin 60. They are VERY accurate. I always put a scope on Marlin 60's but my newest one I have Im just using the regular sights instead of a scope. Its a very fun gun to shoot especially at cactus when you dont have anything to do

I just went to the gun show yesterday and bought more of the BX 25 Ruger mags for my 10-22s


I saw a heavy barrell there, used from a local shop

I might track it down today at the shop and see if I can trade them out of it

Another similar gun to the 10/22 is the Henery Survival .22 or the "AR-7" from back in the day. I plan on going with the AR-7, theres not much for mods or aftermarket support but for a bit over $200, its comparable in features.
