Good info-I like my shivs long and on the end of a rifle- suggest any site for simple bayonet drill & props?? I did some of this in the service but am out of practice.- Good excercise I think for a fat old man-tone it up and loonen it up.

ok for a start , window licker , dunno if it means the same there as here but here that would get you on your butt pretty quick , and advice to stay there until everyone left

you told the OP to disregard what everyone else said for your advice

then gave a reference to a site that promotes some folks and bags other out while selling others stuff that theres no comment on ..

if you had ever really been serious in martial arts you would know when and when not to give ground or run away and you dont do that first up .. or i dont

having taught close combat techniques as we call it here for 20 something years , been world armed services champ on 4 occasions last when i was 41 years of age you would know situational awareness is the best defense you have , weapons, i'm a weapon as is any real student of martial arts , as thats the goal , to train yourself to win in all situations against opponants for real

i've taken guns off folks a couple times knives too and i dont get there by running away

so explain window licker to me and we'll go from there eh?

we where all trying to advise the Op based on our own experiences

but seems only yours matters .. you a betting man ??

i've a wager in mind ...

carson aint that for from my first port of call in the US

i've a charity bout in Corvallis OR

i'm to match a marine instructor, when done there how about you join us in the ring

bouts to promote wounded warrior , it'll be up on their site when the dates fixed for my visa and such

military ruoles so first blood stops everything easy PC stuff

no cages like here and no time locks or such

interested ?

I don't know what a window licker is, and I have never heard that expression before. But, just guessing, a window licker Jack is not. Even though I don't know what that is.

First off the best self defense is without a doubt a gun! that being said, Boxing is an effective martial art! add a ground/grappling art to your game such as Judo or in my opinion even better Brazillion Jiu jitsu and you will gain practicle self defense as well as an improved level of fitness. Avoid styles that do not sparr and do not practice alive training methods.
The only caveate to that is you better jerk that bitch and go to work before I get inside of 20 feet otherwise if you don't have a means to protect yourself with your hands I am going to change your life with mine...

I would encourage everyone to learn unarmed combat of some sort. There will be a time you don't have a gun or time to pull it. Then what?

Here's a piece of advice from an old guy: Don't go looking for trouble, there's always somebody tougher than you.

That said, if you're cornered know how to disable/kill the SOB quickly and efficiently. Don't make one damn bit of difference what "style" you like or have "studied". Playing around for "style" points is for tv and amateurs. Study human anatomy. Stay in shape. If you've been drinking, run....Drunks always lose.

And Marines, soldiers, and Memphis tough guys, and overseas. I'm still all in one piece. Some of them aren't.

I got real smart when I was on perm. SP "hard hat" duty in Naples (70-72) When the Amphibs pulled in and the TF assigned Marines to the Fleet Patrol which we managed while the TF was in port. I got the most decorated and highest ranking NCO who was the biggest in the group of Fleet SP as a running mate. I told him YOU are incharge of the Marines tonite. I am not saying anything to them EXCEPT if they have done something to piss off the Guardia or the Carbinari, THEN I need to get in the middle of it.

Whatever style you study, practice it over and over and over ad nausium. Your reactions must be automatic, without having to consciously think about what you are going to do - some call this 'muscle memory', many martial artists call it the 'empty mind'.
If you have to stop and think about what move to use to block that fist heading for your nose, you will not block it before it reaches your honker.

I enjoy the old Japanese/Chinese MA movies that are dubbed into English; some of the audio is FUNNY!!

I remember one where a heavy set Chinese guy was assuming the Single Whip position used in Tai Chi/Kung Fu. Now I will grant you, it looks a bit odd when you first see a guy stand there with one hand out at shoulder width to each side with one hand forming a hook with the thumb and fingers. But when the English dubber filled in with this guy singing "I'm a little tea-pot, short and stout!", I fell out of my chair.

Than you are a martial artist with a solid background that will do you well in the other disciplines. Personally I would find a gym where they box and start working out again till you are in fighting shape then find a dojo and get kicks and wrestling moves added to your toolbox.

Thats pretty much what I have been working on. I have boxing and Kick boxing experience quite a bit actually. But I can not wrestle for ****. Been hitting the bags and working out so I can join a local MMA gym to learn some BJJ. My wife is giving me crap about it because she thinks with my competive nature I will want to try fighting again. I am not so sure I will I am older and slow these days. HHmm maybe though one time

I know what you mean, I didn't stop boxing till I realized the opponents I was facing were in grade school when I started. But I had a lot of wrestling and street fighting behind me. When I was in port I worked out with the marines and army MP's and took fencing lessons at the same time so I had a well rounded work out. Funny thing they wouldn't let me work the heavy bag, just the sand bag. The gym owner got tired of having to retape it so he banned me from that bag. Come to think of it he wouldn't let me use his jump ropes either.
