Default Remington 7mm-08 to .308

Hello everyone,

I found a used Remington 7mm-08 bolt action rifle at a local gun store. I was wondering if it can be converted to .308? What other calibers would work with this gun? It has a synthetic stock and is in pretty worn condition, and I think I can get it for about 150.00 to 175.00.

Thanks

why would you rule out 7mm08? its a great cartridge, less recoil than the 308. If you want to change a low cost barrel like a douglas would still run around 100 bucks plus install and bluing or refinishing. looking around 150-200 for that. 243, 260 and 338 federal are a option too.

Why? You will end up spending the same amount as buying a new rifle.
Clean and shoot the 7-08 before investing in a caliber change. 7mm is a fine hunting round, why not give it a try?

I agree, I bought my son a 7-08 about 16 years ago, it's wonderful cartridge.

The action will support any short action cartridge in the .473 bolt head family but why? the 7-08 rem is ballistically wonderful and just as powerful as the .308.

The only way that change would be worthwhile would be if the OP has a huge stock of GI 7.62 NATO gathering dust.

The 284 win. Ballistic equivalent of the 280 Remington. But a good load with a good 140 grain bullet in the 7-08 is about as good as you can get.
