What is the purpose of the (circled) indentation on the barrel shown?

That barrel shown is a "Government Profile", and on a real military M4 rifle there is a 40mm grenade launcher (see M203) that can be mounted under the rifle barrel using that slot in the barrel as an attaching point. It has little if any real world usefulness on an AR-15 rifle, but some folks want everything to be "mil-spec".

I had a guy ask me that same question about a week ago. I told him the same thing then he persisted on telling me that I was wrong bc he carried a m16 in Vietnam and they never had that. I said that is be its a M4 not a M16. he still didn't believe me,

Yep,I don't understand the wanting this "feature" unless you gotta 203 to hang...but I don't understand having a "forward assist" either(nor did Stoner and Sullivan

I personally dont care for the forward assist or the dust cover on the ejection port. Im a big fan of the lo pro uppers DPMS offers.

I never "wanted" the 203 cut or needed it. But it's there on a few of mine and sure doesn't bother me that it's there...it doesn't do anything except make it a little less front heavy.

Many of the Viet era barrels had the cut but to USE them you had to use the supplied hand gaurd that came with the 203.
