mauser help

I have a model0 1895 chileno S#d5865 I know nothing about it not even the caliber found it in the back of my paps closet can any one help me out. it has different markings than any one ive seen on here .crossed hammers,and the s# is stamped on the bolt handle

1895 Chilean Mausers were in 7x57mm Mauser.

thanks for the help it has a 6.5 stamped on the floor plate and on the bolt so i was just trying to make sure .

Unless the rifle's been rebarreled somewhere along the line, my guess would be the 6.5 is an assembly, batch or lot number of some sort. I do recall once having read of batch or lot numbers on Central and South American Mausers, but don't remember where on the rifle they were said to have been stamped.

The "65" (no decimal point) is just the last two digits of the serial number.

If it is still 7x57, it should be a good rifle. If it has been converted to .308 Winchester, I advise caution. Many of those were converted by reboring and re-rifling, then drilling out the back of the barrel and installing a new chamber.
