Hello all. I am COMPLETELY new at this and do not yet own a firearm. I live in a neighborhood that used to be peaceful and I don't have the means to move at the moment.
I live in NYC and I do not know anyone who has a firearm or how to get permitted/licensed/etc. I've been searching online and maybe I'm using the wrong words or search terms. Is there anyone who can assist and tell me where/how to begin the process? Also, I would like to learn how to properly use a firearm-is it best to find someone who has one or to learn at a range or something else?

When I lived in the NYC area, the place to start would've been a facility such as the West Side Rifle & Pistol Range in Manhattan. They offered the required training classes, and could guide you through NYC's rather convoluted license process.

I don't live in NYC (Thank God), but it's my understanding that a handgun would be far more difficult to buy and license than a shotgun or rifle. So I'd suggest looking into a pump shotgun for home defense purposes. There's a wide variety to choose from, but the Mossberg 590 series is popular. http://www.mossberg.com/products/sho...pecial-purpose

Getting a pistol lic. in NY city is almost impossible.I am in the finger lakes region of NY and it is not easy out here because of the city and the city has it's own set of rules and regulations.
Check with a gun shop in your area or local LED to see how hard it is going to be. A long gun(shot gun) would be easier but is not going to be easy. You have to go to a dealer in the city to get one. If I sell a gun to a NY city resadent it has to be shipped to a in city dealer. Mike Last edited by goofy; 11-16-2012 at 08:47 AM.. |

Welcome to the forum. I would go with the shotgun. Every one knows that sound "kerchunk", first they say it, then they do it. ![]() and good luck.

Bloomberg is a left wing lunatic nutjob that is probably the most clueless idiot to ever be allowed to hold office in that city. Oh and did I mention he is evil?

We are talking NY city which has different laws regarding guns then NY state.
Out side of the city it is not that hard depending on what county you live in. But can still be a pain. Mike Last edited by goofy; 11-16-2012 at 10:05 AM.. |

Just for chuckles, when you go into the gun shop, ask to hold/feel a mossberg youth model 20ga. Easy to use, light, good in close quarters, can shoot slugs, 3 oo buck shot, or smaller size shot. (One thing to consider in self defense is shooting through an adversary and hitting someone else.) A good firearms class will talk about that. I strongly urge you to take a firearms course. Also, check out the NRA, as they have mucho information.
Safety first at all times. I suggest you also research home security. You most likely won't be taking the gun out with you, and you certainly don't want someone to steal it while you are away. A safe or well secured closet is not all that expensive. Anyway, thought I'd jump in and offer my little bit. good luck fred ![]()

Even long guns require license and registration within the boroughs of NYC. This is obtained through the NYC Firearms Control Board. Wait time when I applied for mine back in '67 was 378 days, though the process has probably been streamlined since.

Become criminal then you'll have a plethora of weapons at your disposal. Other than that your going to have an uphill battle if not impossible.

I got my first shotgun used really cheap, a 20 ga. with 2 shot magazine, still have it. Pumps are nice too. And I always remind people check into PEPPERSPRAY (if allowed in NYC). mjp |
