My downdraft vent is stuck. I pushed the button for it to go down and turn off, but as soon as it started to go down it fell. Now the motor is still running like it's trying to lower the vent and it won't turn off.

Turn off the breaker asap, those motors are anything but continuous duty. What model vent do you have?

I unplugged it so it wouldn't burn it out. It's a GE JVB98SH1SS.

Sounds like the drive arm popped out. You should be able to remove the covers and see it. Did something get caught in it by chance?

this should be a very close breakdown of what it looks like internally

Ok, so I took a look at it and there's a roller that seems to be going bad, it wobbles when I spin it. I looked up the part on the GE website and they want $62 for it, it's just a little plastic wheel.

Google the part number. You should be able to get it cheaper. What part number do you have?

My supplier lists retail price at 63.53. Not surprising. GE stands for Generally Expensive. My cost is 27.93. Yep thats the kind of markup I have to push on people. I can't wait to own my own damned business.

Not sure how much sears charges in shipping, but that seems your best price.

Thanks Dude, there's a Sears parts outlet not far from me, I'll go by tomorrow and see if they have it in stock.

couldn't a guy make one himself? Ace hardware has all kind of plastic rollers. it may take some creativity but I would sure try it first.

Possibly if you can get the dimensions and specs right.

In my parents 6 car garage, (well a 2 plus a 2 wide, 2 deep on the side) I left all my big stuff there, 6' drill press with x,y axis vice clamp, other sized vices, a bending table, welder, grinders, compressor, hammers and all kinds of stuff. Plus my dad had LOTS of stuff and could fix anything.

Once you get comfortable with basic metal work you can make a lot of stuff. That's why I love the drill press and an x,y vice clamp that you can mill or even press stuff on and off.

I built a lot of neat stuff but you need the basic tools....and practice.
