Cool FIRST 9MM RELOADS

Heres my first 9 mm reloads. im kinda skeptical tho, it doesnt seem like the bullets seated enough but its at 1.12" and thats spec. br speer #14. the recipe is
124gr. hornady xtphp, speer case titegroup charge 4.0gr and a oal of 1.112" and a cci 500

no crimp the bullet doesnt have a canalure so i didnt put one in, should i?
so whatcha think?

I think you need to crimp. Crimping for straight walled pistol rounds is necessary to remove the flare. Not a real crimp just a flare removal plus a thou more.

Check to see if the rounds slide in and out of your gun barrel easy. That will tell you if you need to crimp. I crimp 9mm just enough to get rid of the bell and make sure they slide in and out of the barrel.

Check your bullet mfg #, for Hornady #35571 ( which yours should be ) the seating depth should be 1.060". Seat a little deeper and then taper crimp. It doesn't look to me like you expaned/flared the case mouth much if any, so it shouldn't take but just a slight taper crimp for uniformity.

yeah i took the gun apart and place the rounds in the barrle and pressed down a bit and then turned it upside down and the round just fell out. so that must be good right. but i will go back and take out the flare.

Push the bullet nose first against your bench, if it sets back, then you don't have enough crimp. Keep checking with calipers until you get the die set up. Make up a few dummy rounds, this will cut down cost on any oopps.

When you pressed down, did the round go down at all or was it solidly headspaced?

That's a good thing, you should have no headspacing issues.

No problem AR, that looks like a good spread to go test. Post up your range results.

Welcome to the wonderful world of reloading!

It certainly is good to try to meet manual specs, especially when starting out. However, a slightly longer OAL is not a problem if the round fits the chamber of you pistol and feeds through the magazine. The longer OAL will give you a slightly greater case capacity and thus less pressure and less velocity (and a little margin for error especially if you are loading near max)--everything else being equal. I tend to load most 124 gr, 9mm bullets to an OAL of around 1.11-1.12 (but that is just my preference and it works in all my 9s). I really like 147 gr bullets and those I load closer to 1.135.

Ok panhandlepop that makes sense. I already shortened my oal. I'm gunna test them out this weekend and if I have any problems ill adjust my oal. That pressure thing makes sense. Thanks ill keep it in mind.
