Savage 99 update - The Firearms Forum

Country Gunsmith, I tried attaching the photos of the gun but it didn't work. If you want to see then, pm me your email and I'll forward it to you.

Here are the pics you wanted. I did these kind of hastily. Let me know if you need something better. The writing on the barrel is in two areas. One says, "Savage Hi Pressure Steel, 250-3000. "The other says, "Manufactured by Savage Arms Corp., Utica, NY, USA. July 26,1893, Oct. 3,1899, Sept. 10, 1907, May 25, 1909, June 1, 1909." Hope this helps.

The serial # is 209XXX and the barrel length is 21 and 3/16. Hope this and the information emailed will be of help.

That is a desireable Savage 1899, made c.1918-19. This was a submodel specific for the .250-3000 caliber, designated by the 22" barrel and takedown feature.

It originally had a steel buttplate, and that terrible recoil pad is a BIG value-dropper.

I'll have to investigate some recent sale prices of that model.

It's been a while since I handled the gun, you say its a takedown? Never noticed that. I figured the recoil pad wasn't original, can that be restored?

Yep, its a takedown. Might be able to restore the butt, depends on if its been cut.

I'd appreciate knowing its value. Do you know where we might get a buttplate?

Even beaters in that model (1899 Takedown in .250-3000) bring $350-$400. You'd be looking at $600-$700 as it is now.

On some folks, that's a pure waste of ingenuity.
