I'm looking at purchasing a HK USP 45 with the UTL for home defense/target shooting. Any thoughts on this gun good/bad? Any other suggestions?

Excellent choice, really. Very smooth trigger out-of-the-box. Well balances, points well (at least for me).
Were you wanting the Tactical or the Compact? Got 'em both.

I was looking at either a regular or compact. The tactical is getting out of my price range.

The Compact would be the way to go, then. If you were going to go full size, might as well spend the $220 extra for the Tactical and get the adj sights and the Mark-23 bushing, etc. The Universal Tactical Light will fit the Compact, of course.

Why is simplification a longer word than complexity?

Hey doc,what's the price running on the tactical?I still want one,just keep finding other
guns that I want and using my H&K money to buy them.

Thanks Doc,once I get that colt elite paid for I hope to get that H&K,I'll check w/you first
to make sure there hasn't been a price change.
(I think by the time I have saved the money it will be a c&r anyway,lol)
