Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

My kids HATED math when they were in school, which I found surprising, as I used a lot of math in my career in electronics and computers. Now, my daughter is finishing her degree in computer science and is finding math intriguing, my youngest is refurbing houses to rent or resell and uses math and geometry regularly, my middle son is in gunnery in the Rangers and uses ballistics math regularly, and my oldest son is in construction and uses math daily in calculating the geometry of the items he is insulating. The old man DID know a little bit about what was to come for them, didn't he.

I was going to say what Carl S said, so I’ll just second him. I can’t think of any job where you don’t need some math. Unfortunately, they don’t get it in public school. But they feel good about themselves. You need high self esteem you know.

I've had an idea for some time now for a "new math" book

....check stub math,I'd call it,or something like that.........first,I would gather as many check stubs from as many walks of life as I could get my hands on.....from Mc Donalds to doctor's offices,and all points in between..........then on to the story problems;with as many cautionary tales and taxation realities as I could think of....talk about appealing to some one's self esteem

I actually had a person wait on me at a fast food place recently that DID know how to count change and how to round off so you didn't have a lot of loose change.

I hadn't experienced that for about five years or more. I was pleasantly surprised and, frankly, shocked. The person appeared to be middle age, not a youngster by any means.

Here in the Northwest, loggers don't sell lumber. They sell LOGS. Mills buy the logs, turn them into lumber, then the mill exports the lumber to Japan & the Home Depot buys it's lumber from Canada...A Northwest civics lesson!
