Default Cowboy Beans?

I'm looking for a crockpot recipe for what we used to call cowboy beans. Pintos, ground beef, etc etc typically served over toast. Anybody got a good one?

Never heard of Cowboy Beans before. I'm always game for a new dish, though.

Here's a recipe I found on the 'Net. Can't vouch for it personally, so take it for what it's worth:

Ingredients:

1 pound hamburger
1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup catsup
1/4 cup BBQ sauce
1/3 cup white sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons sorghum
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons mustard
1 can pork 'n beans
1 can butter beans
1 can kidney beans
1 can pinto beans
1/2 pound bacon, cooked and crumbled

Directions:

Cook hamburger until brown; drain. Add onion and cook until tender. Add to crockpot with remaining ingredients. Heat on high for 1 hour then reduce heat to low and cook 2-3 hours.

This recipe for Cowboy Beans serves/makes 6.

The before mentioned recipes will work, but I prefer smoked brisket in place of ground beef. Yummy!

That is how I make them except I use hot sausage & sweet sausage rather than beef. I also add 12 oz beer and a few shakes of Red Hot sauce and a tablespoon of molases. I have been known to throw in some tomatos and bacon as well... I soak the dry beans (pinto or navy) overnight in chicken broth. Now I'm hungry....

No kidding. Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but any recipe that calls for putting brown sugar in with pinto beans cannot have the name "cowboy" in it. It sounds like some kind of yankee recipe. You'd never catch real cowboys putting brown sugar in their pinto beans.

Wot's a Rotel tomato? I use FRESH tomatoes in my beans!

Nuttin' comes out of a CAN! Might cut up some spuds to toss in and NO hamburger. Pork hocks or bacon or ham only. Usually bacon, the fatter the better.

Don't fergit to throw in a bay leaf or two. Take'm out before serving.

All of this served with hot jalapeno cornbread smeared with REAL butter. No Oleo allowed in my kitchen.

"Rotel" is a really good brand of canned diced tomatoes.

If you get the hot rather than the original, it will definitely add a "bite" to what ever you add them too...yum...yum.....

there fer that time when fresh maters would get squashed in yer saddle bag.... .....pilgrim.....

I'm with you Al, I seldom have the time to grow tomatoes anymore, although every year I promise myself I'll get back to it, I do have some fresh, dried, crushed tomato left in the pantry from when I was really into gardening, but I use ALOT of Rotel in my cooking, it does tend to add a little spice...I love the diced tomatoes and green chilis.
