LD Bennett: I apologise for the delay (since May) of my reply; Skydiver386 posted a reply to this thread, a good one, which sparked my memory.
You are absolutely right, in your post, that 'crisp, clean, below 5#, minimal overtravel" will more than please most shooters. While largely academic, the fact remains that there is a finite limit, for each and every 'sliding' component, and the force required, to overcome their friction; add components, and you add friction (Weight of pull). I have done 1911's that would lift 2#, but not 2#, 2 Oz, yet, never doubled, or 'followed down' My best Browning was a bit over 3#, 8oz, and required a lot more work, to get there, obviously, without a mag disconnect, but just as obviously, a lot of hours. The Colt pattern pistols, at around 4#, are in the area of "very experienced shooters", IMHO; below that level, I will only work the pistol if I personally know the shooter, and LIKE him/her, as the gun is a tremendous liability exposure, for me, otherwise. Skydiver386, welcome: your post prompted the above overdue, and apologised for, response. I totally agree with you, on these terms; that the pistol is for "Tactical/Practical" use, and, that "Inherent Accuracy" is not an issue. My first CZ75 was a smuggled gun, since we could not buy Czech products, then, but, Canada did. In a 'rattle can', black finish, it shot well, for a martial arm, and functioned flawlessly! Jeff Cooper jumped on the bandwagon, and shortly, the short lived "Bren Ten" erupted, then died. Same design, bigger bullet, no issues, but, priced out of the market. Sky, this was the P-35 Browning, brought to the 21st Century, but early! A fine, but unaffordable arm, for me, today. If my life depended on it, my vote goes to the Browning; otherwise, with room to wiggle, I like the CZ, a lot; all to the double action, first shot!

Sorry, but I've owned dozens and dozens of 9mms, and by excluding Glock, you're eliminating the best one of the bunch.
Fo overall reliability and the best fitting handgun for me personally the Glock 19 is the best. I've owned Hi Powers, Sigs, CZs, Colts, S&Ws, Springfield XDs, Glocks, HKs, Tauruses. My favorites in this order: Glock 19 Glock 26 HK USP HK USP Compact Taurus 24/7 Springfield XD Beretta 92FS Last edited by Panthera Tigris; 10-19-2006 at 01:30 AM.. |

For small/affordable 9mm handguns I suggest looking into a Beretta 9000S or Smith & Wesson Model 908

The kel-tec 9mm has a trigger from hell. Not the PF series the old ones. I like my Beretta 92FS

Vermonter:
If you get a CZ75B do not forget to pick up the CZ Kadet 22LR conversion kit. It is the complete slide for 22LR. The sights and barrel are fixed to the frame and only the bolt moves to load ammo. This is the design feature that makes for the best accuracy, which the Kadet has in spades, and is included in such remarkable guns like the Ruger, the S&W Model 41, the Hi Standards, the Browning Challengers and Buckmarks. Having the barrel and sights fixed to the frame means they are not upset with every shot and do not have to reseat with every shot. Mine shoots right in there with my other target guns and is certainly more than just a plinker. CZ's forever! Even their motorcycles! (actually another company but Czech none the less, as I am or at least partly--half). LDBennett |

Thanks for the tip LD. I'm definitely leaning towards picking up one of these pistols. I don't think you can match them for the price, compared with say, a Beretta. Nothing wrong with Beretta, but the CZ can be had for much much less.

A small to medium framed 9mm that's good for CCW or nightstand would be a SIG P239..not my favorite target gun..grips a little small. A first class pistol however.

LD, I remember Jawa, I even rode them!!!
And, good for you, In reccomending the CZ 75B with the Kadett conversion; on this topic, we are eye to eye. For the younger of you out there, the CZ-75 was the Czech sponsor of the late Dornhouse and Dixon "Bren Ten", a pet project of the late and revered, USMC Col Jeff Cooper! The Czech pistol took the gripframe of the Browning P-35, added a DA-SA Trigger, and eliminated the Mag Safety. D&D took it to the next level, as a serious 10MM pistol, and a good one, but could not find a market for this recoil level pistol, but then, neither could the FBI The CZ-75 is a superb platform, and the Kadett slide only makes it more complete. LD has made a good and valid point or two here; I support his thinking, entirely!

![]() Since my initial post I have managed to spend my saved up KelTec PF-9 monies (and then some) for a new Walther P99c/AC.. It's a fantastic pistol. The photo above was taken of results of the first mag. of wwwb cheap 9mm ammo fired. (from 5', standing two handed..) I am amazed at the qualities of the little Walther. I feel almost guilty being so happy with it since my all time previous favorite the Sig P239 came into the house more than a decade ago. The AS trigger action is unbelievably smooth and light. I love the ambi mag release, free dropping mags, decocker, etc.. Adjustable sights and dead on accurate right out of the box. I know the accuracy shown isn't very impressive for most folks, but I'm a senior citizen, declining vision, shaky hands. and I ALWAYS practice at Y.O.F. (Ye Olde Fart) self defense distance, 5-7'.. This Walther P99c/AS is capable of serious self defense accuracy that I am simply not able to take advantage of.. The P99c/AS reminds me of the Glock 26 I had years ago, but on steriods, with all the little things I didn't like about the Glock corrected... JMOFO Best Wishes, J. Pomeroy

All three are great shooters, reliable, and very compact. It does'nt always have to be a "Block". Or any of the other "Tupperware classics" out there. ![]() |

I have a really cheap 9 but the price was right (free). So I too am in the hunt for one. For reference it's a helwan, beretta knock off basically.
Anyways, I have a ruger P-90 .45 and absolutely love it. I love everything about it from the way it shoots, feel, accuracy, and safety features. I am on a decently tight budget, so an H&K USP is rather out of the question. A friend of mine recently got a S&W that accepts the high cap mag, is compact, and looks like a XD. Not sure the model. What about the beretta M9? Isn't this military issued? Sorry if some of these questions are basic or way off, just haven't had a chance to do too much research on it yet. Thanks all, good day! |
