C&R License confusion - The Firearms Forum

Hello,

I am trying to get into collecting and have received my "reply-package" from the BATF after having filed my Form 7CR. Although the package is full of interesting legal, safety, inventory information, etc. There doesn't seem to be any "license" per se, regardless of the "Congratulations on becoming a federally licensed Collector of Curio or Relic Firearms" letter.

Is there an additional license that needs to be acquired alongside the C&R to receive the appropriate paperwork? Any dealer requires a signed copy of one's license before processing any transactions, but nowhere in this package do I find anything that appears to meet that criteria. In case I am off the mark on this; here are the complete listed contents of my "licensing package" :

PUBLICATIONS:

1. ATF Publications 5300.4 "Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide"
2. ATF Publications 3317.2 "Safety and Security Information"
3. ATF Publications 5300.5 "State Laws and Published Ordinances - Firearms"
4. ATF Publications 5300.11 "Firearms Curios or Relics List"

DOCUMENTS:

1. "Open letter to all recently Federally Licensed Collectors of Curio or Relic Firearms"
2. ATF Form 1370.2 "Requisition for Firearms/Explosives Forms"
3. ATF Form 5300.38 "Application for an Amended Federal Firearms License"
4. ATF Form 3310.11 "Federal Firearms Licensee Firearms Inventory Theft/Loss Report"

I am confused as to why I was not issued a more apparent license, complete with my own FFL Lincense Number, etc. I am embarrassed to admit this level of ignorance, but would greatly appreciate any guidance from you good gentlemen and or ladies on this issue.

You'll get it (license) in a separate letter .

Look for it in a few days

a letter with the return address of

ATF National Licensing Center

DON'T SIGN THE ORIGINAL...

Make all the copies you want making sure the Lic # & experation date are legible

then put the original in safe place, safty deposit box etc.

DON'T SIGN THE ORIGINAL...

Oh yea.....PS...

if you sign the original you have just turned it into a piece of scrap paper......

"Answer".........When you are in front of the dealer you are buying the weapon from......

WELL. if you sign the original, you could still salvage it...the ATF now fianlly allows "faxed copies" to suffice, so you could Fax it to AIM or SOG to have on file, and you could at least buy from them...

BUT Al is right, DON'T sign it

You sign the COPIES either before a purchase in person, or before you send it off to buy a CR via mail, or from and on-line auction, whatever....

I didn't get my SOG flyer this month, and I was wondering why....my CR expired and I got my new one in September...but they have my old one on file and they must have caught it...I'll fax them a copy today.....

Hey,

Excellent feedback everybody. Thanks for taking the time to bring me up to date. I will have to keep my eye on the mailbox. In the meantime I've been reading up on the C&R pieces, a lot of interesting history. I am in California though, so I guess that means no pistol purchases. Still a lot of interesting things though.

Does anyone know the last time ATF updated their book that lists the available fiearms one can purchase with a 03 c&r? THat last one I received was several years ago. Thanks in advance Don

Don, you can look online at http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/relics/index.htm

Unfortunately, the list BTAF&E has there is only updated to May 20, 1998.

Don most of the times when you look in the catalog for whatever you buy the rifle will say C&R Eligile or not

Yep!

But state laws can add to federal restrictions, states can't
take away from Fed Law. So, as long as your state doesn't
add too restrictions of Fed Law, then Fed Law is what applies.

Yeah Tac, but he IS from Kalifornia, if ANY state is guaranteed to "add to Federal Regs" it would be there, with a buncha people from New York probably slapping their foreheads when they see what Kalifornia did saying "Why didn'T WE think of that!!!"...

Actually they have updates as recent as May 2006.
