"The bullet, of Swiss origin, was still in its brass casing, complete with enough gunpowder for it to fire itself."

Yep, put enough powder in them and they go KAPOW all by themselves.

lol thats nothing, check this out.

http://www.guardian-series.co.uk/dis...ds_amnesty.php

KNIVES were handed in during a recent three-week amnesty launched by the police as an extension of Operation Blunt.

A total of 92 knives, swords, machetes and bladed knuckle dusters were placed anonymously in bins all over Waltham Forest in the drive which has just ended.

Local police have hailed the venture as a success, saying every knife handed in is one less potential stabbing victim.

Borough Commander Mark Benbow said the amnesty was helping to create confidence in the community.

continued...
He told the Guardian: "Waltham Forest aims to provide a visible presence and dedicated resources working in the heart of the community to have a positive impact on driving down crime.

"We are strengthening our Safer Neighbourhoods by working with our partners to create confidence and provide co-operation and support for the community and residents."

Waltham Forest was one of the 12 boroughs in which the operation was first launched in 2004. This recent phase of the operation, which started on October 23, was carried out by the police and Safer Neighbourhoods Teams with the aim of arresting those carrying knives and raising awareness among young people about the dangers of knife crime.

The police have also commissioned a DVD, to be handed out by street wardens at strategically chosen locations, aimed at promoting the message that carrying a knife can be as much a trigger for violence as a deterrent. The DVD, called Knife City, depicts a young man leaving a large estate and getting into a fight with three other youths, in which one is stabbed and falls to the ground.

It has the feel of computer game Vice City and switches between real-life shots of actors and digital images to promote the message that knife crime is not a game.

UK-wide figures released earlier this year show that the number of muggings which involve knives rose by 17,730 to 42,000 from 2005-6 while the number of violent knife-attacks involving strangers rose 18,300 to 51,700 in the same period.

It is estimated that about 50 teenagers are the victims of knife crime each week in the UK.

Alf Hitchcock, the Met Police officer in charge of Operation Blunt, said: "There is a common assumption, particularly among the young, that everyone is walking around with a knife in their back pocket.

"The reality is very few people actually carry knives and so young people should not feel they have to carry one to protect themselves."

once upon a time, there was sanity in this world.
I carried a pocket knife to grade school, junior high, and High School, without ruffling a feather, anywhere. It was simply a tool, one that everybody used.
In rural North Carolina, no real thought was given to a youngster carrying a rifle to school; the obvious fact was that he was going to 'hunt' his way home- just lean it in the corner, until classes were over.
Kids were allowed to be kids, and deeds, not tools, were the subject of judgement.
Perhaps we need to get back to reality.
My grandson will be nine, next year, and for Christmas, he will get a brand new rifle, a high dollar custom single shot, built here, by me.
His mom and dad have no issues with this; both agree that one cannot teach kids about fire by hiding the matches.
Why is the world so anti everything?
Perhaps, if we went back to the 'Punish the workman, not the tool' philosophy, reality would return!
Likely, not in England.

The British haven't gone kicking and screaming into a totalitarian surveilance society. They had to get out and push their lazy overlords into making them safe. They had to vote and yell and scream for it.

LOL!!! ok first of all bullets dont just go off from being kicked or left in the sun, if they did the UPS guy would have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world delivering ammo to gun shops... and second of all if it did happen to go off it would act more like a firecracker since the bulled would have nothing to direct it (barrel).

I honestly worry more about stepping in dog **** than on live ammo.

people now adays take everything that can be dangerouse or offensive and shove it in the closet so they don't have to worry about it. this is a dangerous thing to do and its how people become ignorant and it makes them un-prepared... just cause u can't see something doesnt mean it isnt there and doesn't mean u don't need to be prepared for it.

What'll they do next, go into everybody's kitchens and clean out all the steak knives??
Personal responsibility -- and common sense -- are being legislated away. Sad.

Life is risky. They should learn to deal with that fact.

Speaking as a 'Brit' you needn't take the bit of gutter press reporting too seriously. It wouldn't have made a difference whether is was a .22 or .50 BMG the general moronic public wouldn't have known the difference. The press here will do ANYTHING for a story no matter how trivial. The sad thing is we live in a nanny state. I say to those across the pond, don't make the same mistakes we did.

To to exeplify. Last April I joined the local rifle club (has a 450 yard indoor range!) and I've yet to receive my firearms licence. I had to be a member for 3 months before applying and so far I've waited over 5 months for my application to be approved by the police. Okay, that's for 5 guns but any variation i.e. changing or adding the number or type takes another 4 months and a £40 fee. No walking into a store, getting an instant check and walking out with what you want.

Don't go there. Fight for every gun right you can possibly have. Oh, and don't carry ANY sort of knive not even a pocket knife as you might cut yourself or contribute to the general decline in society.

David, Welcome to the forum; guess I might just be the first, of many, you'll hear say that!
I've watched a once proud nation be taken over, from within, where you are at, another, Down Under, a third, next door; I learn well, from the mistakes of others, as do many in this nation, although, the question will always be, is many, enough?
Should you decide to relocate, let me know; you have an 'instant sponsor', should you need one, and a place to stay, if you can learn to think 'hello', and say "HOWDY".
If Texas is not THE 'gun friendliest' state, in the US, it's #2, or 3.
All the best, and again, HOWDY!

First off, let me second Stash's welcome to TFF, David. Drag up a rock and join us in a toast to the rights of gun owners. You won't find any around here who disagree with your sentiments. Oh, and if you'll join us in that toast, do be aware there are a few non-Philistines around here who do prefer a fine Scotch or Irish to American bourbon. We mangage to keep the bar stocked up with a wee bit 'o Glenmorangie and Jamison for the more refined palates among us.

As a long time world traveler and hunter I just plain avoid England when I travel... and its a shame, great places to visit, wonderful people and a beautiful countryside.

However, I often travel with firearms and that just won't work if passing through England. One destination is Texas to Tanzania as we own business there and, of course, hunting is wonderful.

To go through London I have to get off at Gatwick and travel by bus all the way to Heathrow and go back through security and head to Oman and then to Tanzania.... not a chance, the bobbies would have me in chains instantly and the Omanies would just plain poop their drawers, so we now fly through Zurich direct to Dar-Es-Salaam and have no problems. It costs about the same, takes the same amount of time and eases my mind.

Once in TZ we can strap on our pistols, throw our rifles over our shoulders and head for the bush... heaven, almost as good as Texas.

My wife loves Galstonbury, but I promise its the most messed up place I have ever been, the fruit cake liberals of England must have purchased then entire place... crime is rampant and the police basically ignore it... I'll not go back, King Arthur or not.
