Default ID Old Rolling Block

HI, new here and looking for help to ID a friends rifle. It was bought by his great grandfather, (my friend is my age 54), Hex barrel about 3/4 to 1 in diameter, stock has very defined pistol grip checkered, a lot of drop ( 2 1/2 to 3 in.) forearm is checkered rounded tip but very short, entire stock length butt to tip very similar to a muzzel loading shotgun. Barrel length about 22 inches. Rolling block action looks like Whitney, Cal. is 22 short. Only mark is L E G in a slightly crowned rectangle on left side of barrel near breech. Sorry no pictures as yet. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
