Hembrug 1918 rifle? - The Firearms Forum

Hey all,

I have an old rifle given to me around 20 years ago by a distant relative that went in the garage and was forgotten about. Found it again recently and thought maybe someone here could shed some light on its history.

It has 'HEMBRUG 1918' stamped on the bolt housing and seems to have taken a cartridge of some sort (now missing). It has a sliding sight with increments from 2-20 in front of the bolt.

On the butt is a screwed in gold plate thats stamped '1-Legioen I 270'.

Sorry about the vague description, but I'm not firearms smart at all.

Hi gt73........welcome to TFF.

Can you give us any more information on this rifle? Is there any more writing or any proofmarks on it?

Does it appear to be a military rifle?

Can you post a picture of it?

Hembrug was a Dutch military arsenal.

What you may have is a Dutch Mannlicher Model 1895 made by Hembrug. Does it look like #3 here: http://www.butterfields.com/areas/ar...7414a-5391.htm

The 1918 date would be the date it was made. The gold plate with the '1-Legioen I 270' is probably a unit marking.

There's also a possibility that this is a Danish WWI Hembrug bolt carbine.

Thanks Xracer, just what I was looking for!

I really need to take some pics of it and will as soon as I can get my hands on a digicam. It looks to me like a military rifle because of the plate but.....I don't honestly have a clue.

I searched the net some more after posting and found a gun nearly exactly matching mine on this auction site:

My serial number is 4041F (from memory) and has the same B with the crown markings here and there. The cartridge housing has the number 05 stamped underneath. Unlike the one pictured it has no rubber butt plate but it does have strap loops.

The sight on mine has exactly the same side profile but has a raised horizontal 3 inch long rail with increments that protrudes from it facing rearwards. It raises and lowers as its adjusted in/out using a spring loaded slider.

Unfortunately mine is missing the actual bolt.

Yep......the Dutch M1895 and the Danish M1918 are virtually the same gun. It was a little hard to tell from your written description.

The rubber buttplate on the AA gun was a later civilian add-on.

I hope you can find a bolt for it....looks like it might make a nice little shooter.

For some reason all of the links above won't open for me. I get "page no longer available." Anyway, I have an extra Dutch/Mannlicher bolt that may fit your gun. The extra bolt I have fits my Dutch Service Carbine, Cal 6.5X53R. Serial # on the bolt is 136.
