Default 10-22 jamming problems?

i've had 3 ruger 10-22 rifles... all carbine models. 2 from walmart.. 1 from the local gunstore... and i've had the same problem with all three of them. they fail to eject. they will extract, but the bolt ends up closing on an empty casing. i was shooting that cheap federal ammo from walmart... so i switched to cheap remington ammo... okay well it still did the same thing, so i ended up using some cci mini mags... and it did the same dad blame thing still. i complained... 2 of the rifles went back to the company. both rifles still had the problem when i got them back. ruger said that they tested the 10-22's with the cheap walmart federal stuff, 400 rounds with no malfunctions in my rifle. on one of the rifles they replaced the barrel, the bolt and who knows what else. i dont recall what they did on the other one. okay, the rifles never had a problem when using aftermarket steel lips or hot lips mag's only factory mags. and on a ruger 10-22 the shell ejects off of the magazine, even though there is an ejector in the gun, but it is only used when firing without a mag. so i took my dremel tool and cut the little area where the shell contacts to eject on the magazine and solved the problem. i've talked to a lot of people that have had nothing but praise for the ruger 10-22.. and other than the problems i experienced over a year's period, i love everything about them. anyone else out there have this problem with the 10-22?

Sounds familiar. I have had two 10/22 with much the same problems . . . and a couple of others. I spent quite a few dollars on mods trying to make one shoot well and it never did. I do not like the magazines at all. Consider them a plinker and not something that will fire everytime you pull the trigger.

What's interesting is that I have some Butler Creek hot lips mags made before the 1994 'assault weapons ban' (aka: lapse of common sense among Democrats) and they work fine for EVERY shot. I have some steel lips Butler Creek mags made AFTER the expiration of the ban in 2004, and they're absolutely USELESS... Every 1-2 rounds jams...

It very well might be the ammo your using. Cheap walmart bulk pac ammo is known jamming try using a better grade of ammo.

i modified a factory mag by cutting the ejector notch a little deeper with my dremel tool after observing this feature on a butler creek mag. i cant figure out how to post pictures on here but you can email me and i'll email pics to anyone that is interested in seeing the modifications.

pawn, yes the modifications did help. i dont have a 10-22 right now, but i do have one of the modified mags.. i put a very slight rearward angle on the ejector so it would kick the empty out of the action. i never tried but im sure that an extra power extractor spring would help even further, subsiquently im thinking about purchasing another 10-22, from walmart, since the price of the higher capacity mags have come down. and since i figured out a way to remedy the factory magazine problems i was experiencing. it has been several years since i have had a 10-22, but if i remember correctly this completely solved the problem.

I have had my 10-22 for a lot of years. I have 3 factory mags one Butler Creek 25 round mag from before the ban and purchased abother after the ban. No problem with any of them, it spits out empties like a six year old kid spitting out cherry pits.

I presently have six (6) Ruger 1022s of varying models, etc and each and every one of them runs fine and reliably until they get dirty. .22 ammo is *dirty* ammo and the lubrication, etc associated with it will eventually cause most any rifle/carbine to have trouble- especially so with the semis.

I have also modified each by radiusing the rear ventral bolts, polishing the bolts, and all but one of the little beauties have the Volquartsen claw as extractors.

Anyhow, those 1022s have been invaluable in my NRA instruction and teaching my kids and grandkids to shoot.

I have two of the rifles in the .920 bbl and can shoot flies off the targets with confidence at 25 yds.

I was going to pick up a 10/22, but I'm not so sure I want one now. They sound like a lot of headaches come with them.

Have had several 10/22 of various configs. Latest two (purchased within last two years) give me some grief. Earlier ones never malfunctioned. Overall Ruger ain't what it used to be in my opinion! I keep watching for a Made in China roll on!

Also have a 77/22 with that neat 'green' laminate wood stock. Junk ... but pretty. Reworked mags (why did Ruger not make 10/22 and 77/22 mags interchangeable!!??) and trigger. It is just okay!

Have an old (first year manufacture) Rem Nylon66 that will shoot any ammo all day as fast as you load though the butt! Works like one should. Also a Stevens M87 from the 50s that works all day every day!

Most of the new stuff is castings, and I must say the Ruger clean up on castings is quite poor. The inside of my Red Label (hammers, etc) looks like it was done with a metal adze! Inside of my Rem M3200 is smooth as a baby's.

Are the .920 barrels factory target barrels, or aftermarket ? I've been considering a new target model with the hammer-forged barrel. I didn't know they actually used part of the mag as the ejector. That's different. I've owned a few 10-22's and the last one I had did jam alot and I tried a different extractor, different mag's, and a ton of different ammo types. Got rid of it out of frustration.

all of the 10-22's that i've owned would fail to eject, and all of them would do this while clean, less than 50 rounds through the gun. of course i would clean them regularly as a means of eliminating this as the cause of the malfuntions

All my jamming problems stopped when I went to copper plated bullets.
Same thing with the 22 semi-auto pistols.

Yes, shooting clean burning ammo and with copper plated bullets makes allot of difference. But if possible, stay away for cheaper bulk ammo for semi-autos only. I understand that's not always a problem, but some weapons are just like a woman, finicky.

I bought a Kidd extractor, bolt buffer, bolt release, and cocking assembly. Not too difficult to install and the results have been amazing. No more jams my Ruger 10/22 operates smoother and quiter. I am not supporting any paticular parts maker, just saying what worked for me.

Thumbs up Re: 10-22 jamming problems?

I haven't had a jamming problem since I changed over to Tactical Innovations' TI25 Polycarb Adjustable Magazine. I only shoot CCIs, stay away Remington.

I have 2 10/22's, one I bought in 1992. I have never had any problem with it. I haven't cleaned it except for a bore snake in abt 6 years. The only .22 I have had trouble with was a Savage MKII failing to eject. It was caused by the Wolf lube building on the extracter. Clean ed the bolt face & it has never had any problem since.

I have 2 10/22's that were purchased in the early '70s never had any problems with ejecting except when using shot shells then have to cycle manually.. ( also shorts) and lots of different brands, but other wise never any problems with them, and they have had lotsss of use, kids, grandkids, great grandkids and their friends. must be a problem with the later models ??
