Default civil war rifles called 1861 yet lock says 1863

Okay, I plead ignorance. Why do people advertise their model 1863 rifle as an 1861 model? Are they exactly the same except for the lock date? Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Default Re: civil war rifles called 1861 yet lock says 1863

the 1861 springfield rifle musket was THE firearm of the civil war. The 1863 on the lock of most surviving rifle muskets indicates mfg date. but the model is indeed 1861. just like a mosin nagant 1891/30 can be stamped with dates ranging from 1891 to 1944, but they are all still model 1891 designs...
