me and my friend went to check out our trail cameras and to plant a few food plots on the private, posted land we lease yesterday. the road in is an old logging road and once you get to the actual "entrance" to our posted land there is a gate across the road...the only way around the gate is with a ATV on the left side of the gate. to remedy that we put skidder cable up from the fence to a large oak tree next to the bank on that side. well...on the way out i was going to step over the skidder cable to go around and unlock the gate for the pickup to pull through. thats when i noticed the it
![]() . the cable was gone![]() !! and sure enough someone had cut it and we could see where someone had been through there with an ATV. this is SKIDDER CABLE that has to be cut with cable cutters!! that means that "whoever" (we know who it is but cant prove it) had to come in, see the cable, go back out to get the cutters and then come back![]() it happened between monday and yesterday (thursday) because it rained here monday ane the tire tread patterns were distinctive. we called the sheriff's office and filed a report...and got told not to take an agressive stance with this...but... what would y'all do?? i know what we want to do... i dont mean puttin cameras up and whatnot...i mean, what would you do if you cought them coming in??

Well here is the thing. I know you guys are leasing the land and all but I personally dond mind too mush if it is just some kid or young person lookin to do a little trail rideing. We deal with this on some leas property in Georgia also. I look at it this way. As long as the indevidual is not destroying the land or hunting and just riding the trails I'd be inclined to let it go. My family and I along with a few others have delt with thins in the past and what we done was aproach the indevidual and find out his intentions for goin in there. As I said in our case it was a couple of teen agers lookin for a place to ride. We gave them permission as long as no one was hunting. It has gone well for tgwo years now and the two teens in question even helped get a poacher. All was happy and our blood pressure stays low. No problems.

I fought this everytime i had a lease. Never able to catch anybody. I recommend you do put up camera if you want to catch them. Let the law handle it. Night time photos with a flash will give away the camera unless it has nightvision. I suggest looking into joining a ranch where you dont have to worry about food plots and a camp getting ransacked. Beleive me you pay about the same. But if you have to do it your own way here ya go. this may or may not work. problably not if you have to drop them in the dirt. But they will get the message. then you also have to make sure they dont use it on you later. You may just start a war and you will have all your stuff burned to the ground. http://www.defensedevices.com/caltrops.html being in the fence business i can tell you that razor wire works too. it's expensive though. Dont do anything stupid. you will probably notice that you will be better off somewhere else. good luck

Talk to the property owner and add a pile of logs to the open area. It will be harder to move than the cable. Then if the property is close enough, drive by often. You may be surprised at who or what you find. Offer to let them pay the lease for you.

There was a stand stolen out of the same area last year... me and my friend are the only ones with keys to the gate. a fella that hunts on the opposite side of the mountain with a few others told us when we called and asked if hed seen anything out of place on his side that he had seen a tree stand go out of their side on the back of a pickup...
im goin tomorrow to buy a IR trail camera to put up there at the gate. we considered the calthrops idea but like was said..that would start an unnecessary "war" ....the "dont do anything stupid" response is in the front of my mind. being a CJ major ive already talked my friend out of a few "questionable" courses of action what we figure is its someone wanting to turkey hunt...2 deer seasons ago a fella came in on us camping/hunting. back then about 4 or 5 people had a key and someone handed theirs around..so we changed the lock. and now theres this.. im familiar with the razor/concertina wire as a combat engineer...a triple stack of it is a pain to get through. maybe thats what we'll do. pound some pigots and make a triple stack of concertina... thanks for your input fellas...it is appreciated ![]()

Put up the camera and get some pics of them in the act then put up something else to keep them out. A lot of places around here just take a dozer or backhoe and dig a big on the lease side of the gate and then pile the dirt up right beside the gate. Once you have the pics then stay on the sherriff about bringing them in.

well.. we decided what we're going to do... my friends dad "aquired" (learned that in the army...you "aquire" things, never steal them) a 4" steel pipe thats about 25' long. we're gonna cut it in about 4 pieces cement them in the ground and then fill them with cement about waist high. we're still putting up an IR trail camera but hopefully the posts will keep them out

We have 80 acres of private, posted land here in the boondox of TN, and poachers are a CONSTANT problem. Some from the city, some neighbors, but all with the intent of getting game without permission.
We LIVE here, and STILL have trouble with it - I am at the point of pressing HARD. No forgiveness; arrest them, encourage the sheriff to confiscate their equipment and vehicles, the whole ball-of-wax. The game cam is an EXCELLENT idea. I wish our place only had one access like this, the job would be a lot easier! GOOD LUCK!!

it seems that we are not to have good luck ampaterry. we had not had chance to put up the new trail camera yet and found out today that someone had cut down or gate
![]() ![]() ![]() they came in on the other side of the mountain and stole several things from the fella on the neighboring property. and then instead of returning the way they came...they came out our side and cut our gate open![]() ![]() ..probably not the smartest thing to do but my buddy and i went up to the spot to have a look around.. we ended up running into our "neighbor" and a deputy sheriff. we filed a report for the 5th time and then the deputy told us that he and another deputy have also had a stand and several trail cameras stolen this year![]() these ba$tard$ are even stealing from the police!!!!!![]() i pity these people if me my friend or his dad catch them where they arent supposed to be![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ......im sorry all.....i just had to vent a bit![]() ![]() ![]()

21. I am gona say it again. you probably will be better off somewhere else. If this lease is far away and you cant pass by every day you will find it hard to catch them. you must change your stratagy. try making it cost them money when they tresspass. This could be flat tires or a trip to the hospital. if you set gate post you must continue with other line post. you should weld rails between post and fasten razor wire. gotta use the razor wire. most people are scared of it and dont have a clue how to get past it. it is way more effetive than barb wire. weld you hinges on so they dont remove the gate. Weld your chain to the gate so they dont throw it away on you. use the tire spikes but make sure they dont use them on you. since this activity is escalating you are now in war with them.
i will also say that sometimes for the money you spend you should consider joining a ranch. usually you get to kill a buck, doe an exotic and hogs if the land is managed right. If you cant get control of this these idiots, they will tear up your food plots, and your equiptment and camping stuff. You will not be able to leave anything out there. Do you think it's kids off for easter holiday. Thats an idea. This weekend may be your chance if there is anything left to steel. even if it slows down in the summer, and it will, be ready for them to kill your deer in the fall. these are the kind of people that will poach and cut backstraps out and leave the rest.

Personally I kind of like the chipper idea
. Well kind of, it would be great if it was legal . I have 54 acres of land that I live on (and own) even with that I sometimes have problems. Normally its kids and I don't come down hard on them. Just chew their butts and send them packing. I have caught two adults that had previously been advised to stay off my property. One was settled on the scene when I caught him poaching,I couldn't run the other one down.Too old and to fat . But I did let the Sheriff visit with him and he agreed to settle out of court. Trespassing here in Idaho causes an automatic revocation of Hunting and Fishing license for a year. Having said this I have a few words for you. Trail camera's are not cheap. They are however, very easy to steal . I would possibly think about placing them high enough that a ladder is required to access them. Possibly use a steel pipe large enough to place a bar through to make it impossible to remove the camera. Depending on the laws in your area it is completely plausible that if you confront the individual forcefully, you may face legal action against you. Make sure you have the property legally posted. Here we have to have a posted sign every 600 feet and at each entry way into the property. Which ever way you go I wish you the best of luck. catfish

You could always plant a few AP mines on any trails they use.
A few camouflaged holes with punji stakes at the bottom might work as well. ![]()

the place is not out of the way for us to go to at all.. matter of fact i go by the place at least 4 times a week. we were just in there on monday (13 april) and aside from the cable that we already knew was down..everything was fine. then we go back on thursday (16 april) and the gate has been cut down. we rode around on the land...took down some tree stands and ran into a neighboring landowner and a deputy sheriff... it was kind of humarus. the neighbor has gotten a new 4x4 pickup we had never seen so we thought we had cought someone in the act of stealing from him again. and they didnt recognize us in my buddys 2500 cummins because it was dark.. there was a lot of shouting back and forth, but luckily it didnt escalate to either side drawing their sidearms. we filed a 5th report with the deputy (different deputy than the other times) and we got told that he (the deputy) had already had a tree stand and 2 trail cameras stolen from the same area. he also told us to "avoid a confrontation" was his professional opinion and then said he felt the same as we do. he also said if we catch the little sheet heads to go to the magistrates office and swear out warrants on them if we know who they are. i think cyclone was the one that mentioned joining a ranch... thats a good idea but i dont know of any around here to join..i will do some searching on Mr. Gore's internet though. my buddy and i have already decided that since it isnt out of the way to go to that we are going to visit it every other day. and the posted signs are up at least every 400 ft around the boundry line and several places inside the property just incase someone happens to "miss" one on the boundry

We had problems like this for years, forget the police/sheriff. Ours ended shortly after involving the local game warden.
Trespassing fines can be steep and if caught doing other things they may lose they`re vehicles and firearms too. I have little patients when it comes to these types and it is best not to be caught on ours. |

well T, the first people we called were the game wardens. (i personaly despize the lot. just dont like them being around... maybe its just the ones here but its more like they assume youre guilty until proven otherwise. there was an incident here last week where a game warden shot and killed a 76 year old man on his own land for turkey hunting.... infront of his 2 grandsons). when we called them they refered us to the sheriff because there is no proof anyone is illegally hunting or what have you. we went today, put up a camera, took down the gate and brought it home and welded it back together
![]() . since the weather man is calling for rain monday the plan, at the moment, is to go back up tuesday put the gate back in after it has been filled with concrete and then we're goin to tack a few strands of razor wire to it and as for the area to the left of the gate...since we cant get AP mines like Pistol suggested![]() , we are going to dig out an area put a base of concrete and put sharpened rebar in it, then cover it back over with dirt so just enough rebar is sticking out to decommission the tires of stray ATV's and put a strand of razor wire on top of that. that way even if the razor wire over the rebar gets cut, we've still denied access .. a lot of work for deer aint it? ....but like my friend said..."its not about the deer. its the point we're trying to make.....'dont mess with us'..." ![]()

well... since my last post we have fixed the gate and put it back up filled with concrete. there is a trail camera in place to take pictures of the...shall we call them "fellows" for politeness sake...incase they come back. since the gate has been put back up we have not seen any pictures on the camera. we have yet to make the rebar pit beside of the gate...
![]() ![]() we did go in the day before we put the gate back up and found a red 1500 silverado in there where it wasnt supposed to be. my buddy went off![]() ..and i qoute "who ever owns this d@mn red pickup better get their @$* up here before i put f*@!!n holes all in it!!!!" and then he started counting down from 10![]() come find out it was a man and a young boy turkey hunting. we told them what we would do if we found them there again and then told them we would call the sheriff and a game warden..(did i mention my buddy is the sheriffs 2nd cousin?)... we havent seen them back since... so maybe we got the point across..... maybe

I live in the mountains near Winchester Va. About a year ago atv people found me. They come in from a mile away and tear up my paths and have stolen a bench from a camp site. I confronted three atv's with older teens on them and recalled some old navy cursewords all the way back to Nam. They swore they would never be back. I keep finding tracks, I have posted with no result. Any good ideas out there?
