Optimum .224 cal gun?

Ok here is what im looking to build in the near future (once i get the cash). I want to build a 22-250 with 1000+ yard capability. USMC-03 and i briefly discussed building this rifle in this post and I talked about the performance of just a standard 22-250 Remington 700 rifle at 800 yards. (fun but i want more performance and i know the 22-250 is capable i just need the right platform)

USMC-03 also posted a great sight where I found the barrel was looking for http://www.pac-nor.com/ I already know most of the stuff im set on and its going to be a McMillan A5 with Harris bipod and a Bushnell 6500 Elite 4.5-30x50 (I would like a Shmidt & Bender but that's out of my price range) all on a remington 700 action with a Timney trigger.

The things I am uncertain on for my gun is what barrel would be best suited for the 22-250. What i do know is its going to be a fluted bull barrel 1.25" in diameter. My question is what is the optimum configuration for bullets weighing between 70-90 gr? I need to know Length (between 26"-30") which twist is better 1/7" or 1/8" and i need to know how many grooves will give me the best accuracy 4 or 5?

Also what would be the maximum velocity i could safely fire a 70-90gr bullet using the 22-250 cartrage?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Tony,

Check out the .22 Remington Bench Rest cartridge; it's the only other round that I can think of with the performance you're after.

I think 26' would be fine for either round. My preferance would be for six grooves but four or five is also perfectly fine. I also wouldn't worry about what your maximum velocity might be; you're going to just have to run your own tests to find out. Either way, a .223 will just barely reach 1,000 yards with a stable bullet (and I do mean JUST barely) and either the .22-250 or the .22 BR will out perform that.

I think I'm going to go with a 28 inch Krieger barrel with a 1/7.7 twist and the difference between the 22-250 and the BR is marginal so im going to stick with the 22-250.

After this rifle is built im going to build the same setup in .338 LM. do you know good actions that fit the Mcmaillan stocks in .338 LM?
