Default Extended grips on Iver Johnson .22

I was wondering if anyone here has ever "fit" a pair of these on an Iver Johnson small frame revolver; or if anyone has a revolver with some already on.

From Numrich:

"Factory original black plastic extended grips for better handling. Owl-head logo fits small frame, .22 caliber 7 shot and .32 caliber 5 shot. U.S. logo fits large frame, .38 caliber 5 shot. Final fitting required."

http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd....SKU=542080&MC=

Seems from the pic that these would required 2 Stock Screws to install... I was also wondering about the escutcheons that might be needed.

This as from the pic it looks like the hole that would have to be drilled is a smaller diameter than the one on the "regular" grips - so different escutcheon?

How many stock screws and escutcheons would be needed in total?

these grips are modern reproduction of original factory grips that were available between about 1905 and 1941. they were manufactured in the 1950's thru 1970's, are plastic not hard rubber (like original) and do require a lot of fitting. i have done one set with only marginally satisfactory results. they do require two screws and about the only place i know to get the screws and escutcheons are from broken grips.

Thanks for your input Mr. Goforth -

So I guess when Numrich says "... Factory original..." they mean reproductions made by Iver Johnson - at a later date.

Wonder why the IJ folks would do this?

Guess maybe there was a demand for grips for revolvers that folks were still regularly using for plinking.

They do state that these are "black plastic", not hard rubber as I suppose the ones made 1905-1941 were.

If you don't mind, when you have some time could you expand a bit what you mean when you say, "... and do require a lot of fitting..."

Guess "a lot" is subjective (open to interpretation)... and relative.

Not really concerned with finding the hardware, sure I'll be able to.

According to the Numrich web site, the screws and (just) the head escutcheons are available from at this time.

What does concern me is that you say, "... i have done one set with only marginally satisfactory results."

Do you mean as far as the best "final fit" that was possible- or what these looked like after they were on the revolver.

Guess it took a lot of work with a Dremel, etc. to fit these...

As I am curious, I went ahead and ordered a set of these from Numrich.

Anyway, when and if you have the time, and get a notion - I'd appreciate some input and guidance.

... and thanks again for your time - marco

i am probably not the best grip fitter but i have done some. in my opinion i had to use a dremel to much to make them fit. let us know how the fitting goes.

Thanks again bill (if I may)...

Sure will let folks here know "how it goes" - I will take and post some pics of the process as I go along and post these her too.

Who knows, there might be a few folks here who could use some grips like these to replace the old chipped and cracked ones on their revolvers...

I'm not a gunsmith by a long shot, or any interpretation of the word - but I do "dabble" and "tinker"... often end up breaking things.

But I'm learning.

Do have all kinds of tools that are very apt for gunsmithing in an old machinist's tool chest and a bit of mechanical aptitude.

I used to be (among other things) a V.W. mechanic once upon a time - I'd like to think - a REAL mechanic who fixed parts, not just changed them out.

Still am fixing / making many to keep my vintage Beetle convertible running and original.

Anyhow, I'll take this project slow and have fun at it... and "report" progress.

Once more, thanks for your time.
