Just came home with a brand new Springfield M1A....
This is the G.I. model with the chrome lined barrel, birch stock, and parkerized finish. I was going to go for the more expensive Loaded model with the National Match barrel, sights and trigger, but the N/M barrels only have a service life of between 4 and 5 thousand rounds....(hell, I could be replacing the barrel once a year).... The chrome lined G.I. barrel...(al thought not concidered as accurate as the N/M)....has a service life of 20,000+ rounds before it's done. Besides I tried both triggers, and they felt the same to me...easy pull & no creep. The only down side here was that I wanted to buy an extra mag, and they only had the 5 rounders....no 10's......but I did pick up 400 rounds of surplus English made ball ammo for it....with any luck I'll be punching holes in paper and knocking over bowling pins tomorrow.........

Good for you, Tony! If you're worried about shooting out a match barrel once a year, that's excellent positive thinking.
For match accuracy, a NM barrel will deliver about 4,000-5,000 rounds. It will continue to produce acceptable combat accuracy for a good many more. But, you made a fine choice. Now, you should get a first quality sling like the one made by Turner Saddlery. The POS they sell at Wally World for less than $10 only looks like a sling. Don't be fooled! You also need to get a good book on marksmanship techniques. Go to Jim Owens' JarHeadTop website and pick up any or all of his books on shooting techniques. There are other good books but Mr. Owens' books are as good a place to start as any. The M14 Owner's Guide and Match Conditioning Instructions (1996) by Scott A. Duff is one of the "must have" publications for the M14/M1A shooter. The USMC and Army FMs are also good to have. Also, you can't have too many magazines or too much ammo. You live in NJ so you must first move to another state and then order a couple of ten-packs of USGI 20 round magazines from Cole Distributing. Did I mention that you can't have too much ammo stockpiled? |

Of course we will need a range report.
Enjoy the new family member, just remember to feed it well, and often. ![]()

I took her out first thing Saturday morning.
Stared off by shooting 10 - 3 round groups at a couple of small bore targets set at 50 yards to zero in the iron sights. One of the range officers spotted my shots with my binoculars, and I made click adjustments after each 3 round group. Once I had it fairly acceptable, I set up 10 bowling pins at 100 yards...(note: bowling pins appear as fuzzy white dots on the horizon when viewed through military peep sights at 100 yards).... Using the bench and sand bags, I hit 22 pins out of 30 shots. Not too bad for my first time out with this rifle, and it's the first time I've shot any rifle in close to 20 years. This coming weekend I'm going to try a couple more paper targets at the 50 yard line to see if I can get the sights any better, then I'll kill a few more bowling pins down range trying it from the standing position. I do need to get a sling, and I'd like to get a leather one. I also want to get the plastic covers for the front & rear sights, a couple more 10 round mags, and lots and lots of surplus ammo. Speaking of which, I discovered that www.ammoman.com is about a 45 minute drive from my house, and he has Aussie surplus, 800 round case, for $140.00 picked up at his place of business. Of course with NJ state sales tax, the final price will be closer to $150.00. I've seen it a little cheaper else where on the net, but the shipping would probably equal out the price AmmoMan is offering. With any luck, I'll sneak the wife's camera out to the range with me, and get one of the range officers to snap a shot or two of me with my new pride & joy...... ![]()

I thought I had read that the different model M1A rifles come with different barrels on them depending on the application.
For example the accurized White Feather model comes with a super duper chrome moly barrel and the Standard M1A comes with the extra thick tin foil barrel. I can't find the article to quote but it was something along those lines. |

Hi Tony Mig,
Congratulations on the M1A, they are truly beautiful to shoot. I've owned mine since the mid 80s. I had been in love with the model since I was a kid and always wanted one. Told my wife I needed a deer rifle. Since she didn't know any better I got to buy it. Thing came with a bipod and several 20 round magazines and cleaning kit. I'm sure you are proud. Enjoy. |

I've had bad reports on that sleeved Indian 308, and it isn't genuine NATO ammo, it's simply Indian surplus. The Ausie stuff is very good, but here (below) is genuine NATO ammo, NATO cross (+) headstamped and top notch quality. It ships out of my place as fast as as it comes in, as it's the last release of THIS NATO ammo in sealed air tight/water proof battle packs! Tac |

Picked up a springfield M1a several years ago. Ilove this rifle and with a gunsafe full of fine rifles, this would be the last rifle I would think of getting rid of! To me, this is a better gun than any AR type rifle though that gun is also a good choice. I just happen to like the firepower that the M1A has.
