If someone offered you a good 1911-A1 in 7.62 Tokarev or 7.63 Mauser would you jump at the chance? I was thinking that a hot .30 caliber pistol; would make a better target pistol then other calibers currently available. A 88 grain .30 caliber bullet traveling at 1450 fps should have a much flatter trajectory then a 230 grain .45 caliber bullet with a speed of 800-850.

Curious as to why this hasn't been attempted before.

Nope. At normal pistol target ranges, trajectory is hardly an issue.

Besides.....who says that a flat trajectory = greater accuracy?

Years back AMT produced a 1911 that fired a .30 carbine round. The Automag III. Not very accurate and production ceased.

My .45 match ammo runs about 850 fps.and is very accurate. So , I'll stay with .45APC.

I would think that a hot load would make it more difficult to recover for your next shot?

I tried keeping my bullseye 45 loads at about 750fps.

Ziggy....to a degree, it does. That's what makes it difficult working up loads for Pin competition......you need the power and accuracy to get "1 shot = 1 pin", but you also need to quickly acquire a sight picture on the next pin.

That's the beauty of the 1911, though.....the recoil is very controllable. If you use the "locked wrist, loose elbow" method, you just rock & roll. The pistol recoils up in an arc, and you bring it down in that same arc and squeeze off as you acquire the next pin.

Once you get in the rhythm......it's a JOY!
