Default The smell of your grips...

Does anyone else take their 1911 and take a really good snort of the wood grips on it? When they were new i did not know if they were real wood...but now that i have handled them there is no doubt they're real wood. The smell reminds me of firewood...

I'm also notorious for opening the action and taking a good whiff of the inner workings... smelling the Hoppes and lube in there. Even dry the metal or something has its own kind of smell... a good smell.

AK rifles have smelled the same for the last 30 years. Different manufacturers but mostly the same basic smell. Unmistakable smell.

I guess for some a cigar brings back good memories. For me its that new and used gun smell....

Hmmm.

I will fight down my first inclination, which is to mention the thought that you need to get out more - - -

And I will be honest and say YES, I have sniffed my guns -
And I LOVE the different scents they give off -

I love the smell of hoppes number 9 in the morning -
And the aroma of powder residue in the evening -

And yes, my 1911 grips are real wood.
I am positive, because I cut them out and whittled them into shape myself from a block of oak -
And I can smell that, too -

There is a distinctive gun smell. I used to walk into arms workshops, gunsmiths etc. and there was a particular smell. Not unlike an engineering works, but not quite the same.

I miss it a little.

I love the smell of burnt coal and bunker oil. The smell of petroleum coke in the morning. I love the smell of transformer oil. Most of all, I love the smell of iodine 131.

And I love the smell of burnt nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. Except when it comes from Hodgdon Clays which I think smells like firecrackers. Excellent powder in every respect except for the smell. I wrote Hodgdon a letter. They promised to work on it.

Grip Sniffers. Hoppe Sniffers. Gun Sniffers. You have the right to bear arms, not sniff them. I guess we will have to have a new scratch and sniff Birthday Card offering this year.

If you ever get a Mitch Rosen holster it will have a scent you will not forget - it will fill the room when opened.

Suwannee, there can't be much left of your nose, after those aromatic cocktails
If it is confession time, The airport burnt kerosine smell, but not in the living room,
Erinmore flack pipe tobacco, cigar humidors, but not burning cigars.

What on earth does scorched argon smell like? Iodine 131?
Never mind the smell, what IS hot tap magic?

Great, they'll probably have to start selling gun cleaner behind the counter now. It's an addiction that anyone ages 18 and up can suffer from.

Am I missing something, I thought everyone smelled their grips. I know I certainly do, and love that smell of wood, whatever kind it is.
