rock island 1911-a1 cs - The Firearms Forum

recently puchased a RIA 1911-a1 cs, once i got home to field strip and remove shipping oils, i took the slide off and was unable to remove spring and barrel from slide . i carried a 1911 for five years in the military and a number of years as a citizen ( all full size ) so i consider myself well versed in the disassembely of 1911s . this weapon has a bushingless barrel and a full length guide rod . how in the @#*% does this come apart. i have tried everything i can think of to get this separated . the manual is for a barrel with a bushing and mentions nothing about full length guide rod . any help in this matter is appreciated. thx in advance

It is hard for me to explain in written words.

Most one piece full length guide rods rotate at the rear (about 90 to 180 degrees) to come out of the slide. I have no experience with your model pistol. I am making an educated guess.

Some are two pieces and an allen wrench separates the front from the back. Some are just short enough that the bushing can be turned. I have not seen a RI that is bushingless???? But it is a compact, isn't it. They are often bushingless.

I would think that you could remove the slide hold open lever from the frame while controlling the slide and slip the barrel and recoil spring assembly off the front intact. Then with the slide on the bench remove the spring and guide from the bottom of the slide.

Most other non-1911's work that way (???). Most of those others have index marks on the frame and slide, that you align by pulling the slide back, to be able to remove the lever that is the pin for the barrel link or the pin for the cam slot in the bottom of the barrel.

If all else fails call them (RI) I found them helpful when I had an extractor problem on the full sized version.

That pistol probably uses a captured spring. Retract the slide to the rear and look for a small hole thru the guide rod. After finding the hole, cut and bend a small section of a paper clip (90 deg) and insert thru the hole thus collapsing the spring. Move the slide into battery. Then remove slide.

The spring and guide rod should come out the rear of the slide. Then fold down the barrel link and slide the barrel forward out of the slide.

I probably left something out due to high fever with this flu but I think you get the idea.
