Default is it original or a replica

i came across a pistol engraved hawes firearm company- los angelas- california on the other side of the barrel 44 caliber army model made in italy. it says engaged 16 may 1843. it has the engraved naval ships. i dont know much about it i found it when i moved into my house. if anyone can give me info on it it would be very appreciated. oh and maybe some value info also

another dead give away is that 1843 was several years before CA even became a state.

Believe Hawes to be an importer. It is replica made in Italy. If it says black powder
only definitely replica. When originals made no reason to say black powder only, that's
all they had.

To answer your question very simply, Yes, it is a modern replica. Value, if in excellent condition, AWAG would be. 200 dollars. Yes, Hawes was a big time importer in the 50's and 60's.
