Default I'm Still Struggling to Accept My Illness

I have OCD(obsessive compulsive disorder)and i'm still struggling to accept that I cannot do everything that the average gun owner can do.The thing I am talking about is getting my CCW.Federal law prohibits anyone judged as insane,or have been committed to an institution from getting a CCW permit, most states follow this law,and on a federal level,I AM eligible to recieve my CCW permit. The problem is that I live in Michigan. In Michigan, they not only go by federal mental health laws, but they add that you simply cannot have ANY mental illness at all in order to get a CCW,so since I have OCD,and see a psychiatrist,I cannot get a CCW.It kind of frustrates me and I am accepting it for the most part, but it is just so frustrationg to know that I CAN'T do something I know I am capable of.And it's even more frustrationg to know that if I lived in Ohio, just a few hours from here,I would be eligible, because I have never been judged as insane nor have I been legally sent to an institution,I just got simple OCD.And if my state is so darn strict with CCW laws, then why am I allowed to purchase a handgun in the first place?Because it's my right and I have done nothing to have that right taken away is why, there is no mental restriction on owning guns exept for being judged insane or sent to an institution. So why don't Michigan laws match up?I CAN own a handgun and pass the NICS with a mental illness, but I CANNOT get a CCW.Frustrated is all I can say.

your venting is not all that disturbing--
though linked visually with your avatar and your screen name,
they present a disturbing overall effect.

--------->much better picture!

might i suggest that a time period of, say 3 years of rifle & perhaps black powder
to prove yourself to yourself. than re-read what you posted and rewrite it.

as an aside--paragraphs can be your friend
perhaps even help you to organize better.
rambling does not make for a strong presentation.

knowing you have a problem and knowing that you can not just deal with it--you can beat it, is a goodness.

the more you believe you can, the more you can.

Didn't specify as to whom told you that you could not get one, did the MSP tell you this? I would contact them and find out some more information; unless you've already done this.

On the actual concealed carry application it says-yes-or-no-"do you have a mental illness reguardless of whether you are recieving treatment or not".And then down on the app it elaborates, and says that you must "NOT have a mental illness reguardless of whether you are recieving treatment or not".I have looked at this from all angles, and I don't see a way around this one unless I lie.I have well documented records of my mental health records that show I do have a mental illness,I have been officially diagnosed.

I would get ahold of the MSP and talk to them directly. I wouldn't necessarily use my phone or give them my name, but I don't see why they should ask. Just ask for some clarification and some direct answers; they should have no reason not to explain your options to you. At least this way, you will have it from the horses mouth; there may be an appeals process avail to you too. I don't know your situation, so I can't speak specifically, but you got nothing to lose by trying.

ninjatoth: This advise by Claude Clay was very good in my view. I don't know him but based on his comments of concern my bet is if you were to PM him he would perhaps explain his thoughts in more detail.

OCD is not a mental illness. It is a behavior Disorder.

Sounds like you are dealing with idiots.

I agree, many people have OCD. I don't think it's a disease. I think you need to speak to some more people.
Hang in there, I'm on your side.

Thanks for your support.I think my psychiatrist did tell me it was a mental illness.I don't have the need, time,or money to get a CCW(cpl)right now,so I haven't put the effort into trying to find out more info or to fight it yet.It just buggs me to the point that I want to tell someone and have someone agree with me that my state is weird. Why they issue pistol permits to people that they won't issue cpl's to is beyond me.

call them up, you may be suprised what they have to tell you. they may see it as a behavior issue and not a mental illness. Unless you call and get it from the horses mouth, this issue will continue to annoy you. At least if you call, you will know for certain and not be going on an interpretted assumption. 5 min with the MSP and you can set your mind at ease.

Apply for a permit and see what your state says...
You will be able to tell from the application if you have a shot or not
