Here's a loaded question - what's the best book out there on building your own 45? I recall one from Wilson, but can't find it anymore. What reference material are you using?

To be honest I don't have a book that I am using.
I am comparing everything to my Springfield Mil Spec. I have used www.sightM1911.com for a whole lot of my information. I have also gone into the archives here at the TFF (that is a treasure trove indeed). I have completely taken apart my 1911 three times to familiarize myself with all the internal parts. Essentialy I have been reading everything I can get my hands on. When I have been reading the information I will have my Mil-Spec taken apart going back and forth from the written stuff to the parts themselves to learn what does what.

On my .45 I have done the following with great success....
Polished the rails on the frame Polished the rails on the slide Polished the lugs on top of the barrel ( leading edges ) it now has a smother lock up. Adjusted the trigger pull (weight) it is alot easier to use, my accuracy has improved from this. Stoned the sear (only 4 passes with the stone) smoother now Stoned the hammer hooks (where the sear meets the hammer) again 4 passes only just to smooth it. All the above has helped a great deal with my accuracy, it has improved simply by smoothing some of the surfaces. The pistols performance has improved also hand in hand with me. I did install and tune a new extractor on a Charles Daly ( I had help because the extractor was new and had to be fitted and tuned ). The Daly has since left my care I only had it 2 days anyway! Most of the stuff I have done was by following instructions you guys had posted here at the TFF (archives). I will need help though. I am not a professional nor claim to be.

Frosty, now just fit a barrel link and match barrel bushing.
Then watch the groups tighten up. After that, you may want to invest in Chip McCormick adj. rear sight. ( drop in fit) And then............................ Your doing all the right things. Nothing like owning a real tack driver you built or improved yourself. |
