WARDS WESTERN FIELD MODEL30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- hello everyone, ive been reading your posts for weeks now, and finally decided to join. good to meet you all, unfortunatly i also need alittle bit of help. i have a wards western field model 30, made by stevens. the model 30 resembles a ww1 trench gun, 12 guage. im trying to tear it apart and reblue the steel, as well as refinish the stocks, where i am running into problems is getting the barrel out of the reciever, getting the slide off of the magazine tube, getting the action arm (or whatever the proper term is) disconnected from the slide and the bolt, and removing the bolt.i have figured out how to get the rest of the internal workings out. also i need a supplier for some springs trigger springs, and a detailed parts diagram. i know its a big request, but im hopeful that you guys can help out. this is my first time taking apart a shotgun this old, and its definatly not like tearing into a mossberg, remington870 or anything modern. thanks in advance for all your time and help. sorry for writing a book. Swede, thanks ALOT!!! for the suggestions. Kdub, yes Cali stands for Californicatingfornia, great state if you look at the land itself, but damned if the politics and laws dont just suck. i havent made it out yet, but am working on it. getting more and more tired of being told what i can and cant have every day. least i can still buy these old weapons, put alittle love into them, and keep using them for along time. next thing im afraid of though is some bs sniper rifle bill or an short barreled shotgun ban. WHAT NEXT??? ohh and did i forget that tax on ammo? cant remember who thought that one up. thank god that it never went thru. kind of actually waiting for california to say "its ok for you to have a PC weapon, but the ammo isnt pc, so you cant have that at all.. " thanks again for the help. and sorry for the rant. please dont hold California against me. i just live here... WARDS WESTERN FIELD MODEL30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kdub- funny you should mention arizona as a place to relocate to. i was talking to a guy in reno last month at the reno gunshow, one of the owners of Windsor Arms, guy by the name of Bruce.. hell of a nice guy, we spent quite awhile discussing the different "virtues" of living in Arizona, and to be honest it sounds like my kinda state. trying to get things squared up here as far as my finances and bills go, so i can get the hell outta dodge. working on it though. if i moved to arizona would that mean i need to buy my wife new towels, and try not to use these to clean my guns on??? =) Ray in California "Beware the man with only one gun, chances are he KNOWS how to use it." warpig883 *TFF Staff* Posts: 4646 (9/8/02 11:40:28 am) Reply | Edit | Del ezSupporter Re: HELP!!! WARDS WESTERN FIELD MODEL30 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Warpig- i got your email. THANK YOU!!!!!! now if theres someway i can return the favor, just let me know!!!!!!! i really appreciate this. also, im reblueing this shotgun at the moment. have had a hell of a time with the magazine tube, where the slide rubbed it , it was showing thru the cold blue in the white still, so i posted a topic on the tech page here, and i got a very usefull tip from Hadaway, after making sure that all the metal is sanded/polished/burnished evenly, HEAT the part before applying the cold blue to open the pores in the metal. it worked! no more streaks and white spots. i heated it the first time in the oven, just turned it on and checked it every minute or so, it got wam/hot in just a few minutes, took it out to the garage , degreased it again to be safe, and the blue stuck beautifully, after that ijust rinsed it in HOT HOT water to reheat the metal , and it worked beautifuly. id like to get your guys oppinion on my shotgun after im done. also something else i kinda discovered with cold blues. Outters didnt work to well for me, probly has to do with the composition of the old steel, Birchwood casey Perma Blue, wasnt working either, BUT Birchwood Casey Super Blue, ahh man that stuff is GREAT any of you ever use it?? i think it may be a good product for those problem projects. like to know what ya all think, and your own experiences.. Hello, I am new to using forums.
I have a Ward's Western Field Model 30 SB562A. I read the prev posts and still have a couple of questions. Luckily I don't need any parts for the shotgun is in realy good shape. Wanted to know if anyone knows what years these were produced? Does the Ward's stand for Mongomerywards? Does anyone have a schematics of this Model? (could find one on Numrich) Any info on this would be gratly appreciated. Thanks |

The Western Field Model 30 is a Stevens Model 520.
Yup, Wards stands for Montgomery Wards

Disassembly of a Stevens Model 520 Shotgun
1. Open the action and using the lengthwise ridges on the magazine tube as a grip, turn the tube clockwise (rear view) until it stops. 2. When the tube is turned, the tube base at the receiver will move forward about 1/4 -1/2 inch, withdrawing its side lugs from their recesses in the front of the receiver. 3. Move the barrel and magazine assembly straight down. It will be stopped by the bar of the action slide. 4. Move the action slide all the way forward until it stops, drawing the bar completely out of the receiver. Then remove the barrel and magazine assembly downward. 5. A single screw attaches the magazine end piece to a lug on the barrel. Taking out the screw allows removal of the end piece, magazine spring and the follower. The tube can then be unscrewed from the barrel unit and the fore-grip is taken off the tube toward the rear. Unscrewing the front cap will allow the wood to be removed from the action slide toward the front. 6. Remove the stock mounting bolt. 7. Take off the buttstock to the rear. 8. Remove the cross screw at the bottom rear of the receiver. 9. Drift out the cross pin at the lower edge of the receiver. 10. Remove ther trigger group downward. 11. Move the bolt forward in the receiver. Swing the carrier outward, move it inward off its pivot post and remove it. 12. The carrier dog pivot is a riveted part and removal should only be for repair purposes. If the pivot pin is driven out, a plunger and spring will be released. 13. Keep the bolt slide plate pushed rearward and push the bolt forward out of the receiver. 14. In some guns it may be necessary to remove the bolt stop screw (at the front left of the receiver) before the bolt can be taken out. It depends on the degree of wear. If you need to take your shotgun down more than this, or have other disassembly questions, let me know. I'll post more here.
