when you say it won't accept a shell do you mean in the magazine or trying to load one in the chamber?

have you disassembled the gun for cleaning? not knowing the history of it there might be a plug in the magazine, try to chamber a fired 2 3/4 shell

Remove the barrel from the receiver. Take out the magazine spring retainer, magazine spring and follower. Possible that someone put in a homemade plug that is too long.

If not, I'd have to see how the shell is binding.

You arent trying to put 3" shells in it, right?

taken it all apart--no obstruction or plug---it is a 2 3-4 shell it binds at about the lip of the shell thats why i think it might be a 16 gauge--is it possible to have a 12 ga barrell on a 16 ga reciever???????if so couldnt i tell be the serial number????

The 16ga guns were built on 12ga receivers, but there are several parts that are unique to the 16ga. The only way to tell would be to contact Remington with the serial number.

My bet is that it was a 16ga. and someone changed/added a barrel to sell it at auction, not realizing it was a 16ga. Doc is right on the receivers....12 & 16 same.....BUTTTTT, the magazine tubes are downsized to prevent spring binding and noise. Thats why the 12 was always in fear of 16 shells, because they could be loaded and chambered.....also reasons for color coding shotshells. A 16 will also chamber 20`s. I suspect it is a 16ga and the way to check is simple. Remove the forearm and barrel assy., the remove the sping and follower from the magazine tube, if a 12ga., will not just drop into the tube and slide to the end of the magazine tube...it`s a 16ga. The only other thing would be a small dent in the magazine tube, just ahead of the lower part of the receiver. LTS

Plus, if I remember correctly, one of the shell latches should be marked 16.
