Default Re: rimfire case rupture

The 511 Rem action is strong enough for the pressures of any 22 round if the rifle is in good working order. I have one I relined to 17m2 which has much higher pressure and have done several others without any problems. It is my favorite rimfire rifle and a great candidate for this conversion due to the extractor system being more positive than a lot of other older guns. Recutting the chamber of a 22lr requires that you set the bbl shoulder back at least to the point of chamber damage, trim the tennon the same amount, recut the extractor slots, recut the pin slot for the bbl pin and rechamber with a reamer; if the job is done properly. That constitutes a lot of time and work for $100.00 and is a bargain. At the same time, all the cuts have to be made with the bbl properly indexed so the roll marks and stampings on the bbl are in the proper place. Relines simplify the problem while giving you zero headspace and a new bore in the process. Most times ruptures will be caused from a bad chamber or overloaded ammo. Rem Golden Bullet in 22lr used to have this problem more frequently than I could stand; or the bullet might go "pop" instead of "bang" leaving you to check if it left the bbl at all. I have not used them since Rem made all the changes to their equipment so I have no idea if this still happens as often as it used to. If you check your cases after firing and they are out of round/shape, then a reline might be in order. If a reline is called for and the smiths in your are want more to reline it than you want to spend, let me know. I'm always looking for these rifles to convert. In all probability, you just had a bad round. Good luck.
