I have a rifle 8MM cal, It is not German at least not that I can see. It has no markings on it at all, the only small stamp I can find is on the knob of the bolt. It is a Z or a N in circle.
The bolt handle is stright and all else aperars to be standard 98 type. Ihe sling swivels are on the bottom and, also on the side in the German style. The bayonet lug is differnt also. I have wondered about this rifle for years, any info would be welcome Thanks Ole Sarge

Sarge,
Can you post a picture of the rifle? There are so many different variations of the 98 it is tough to identify without pictures |

It looks to me to be a Vz-24 variant of the 98, I'd venture that the bolt is a replacement as the stock is set up for a down turned bolt hence the cutout beneath the bolt. Several South American rifles were made on this pattern both at Brno and Leige in Belgium.

Sorry, I failed to mention that the bolt is numbered to the action. That is what is such a puzzle to me, as my outher Mauser rieles are numbered the same. As I said before the only marks I see are the tiny z in a circle.
Thank you for your trouble! Last edited by daw8752; 08-09-2010 at 12:53 AM.. Reason: spelling |

Sarge,
Could that z in a circle actually be a z in a C? |

First you say it has no markings, then you say it has a serial number. Any other markings you might have missed or forgotten to mention?

Sorry 'bout that, my eyes aren't what they used to be. I went over it with a 10X glass and the only thing I found was what apeared to be a faint s, a, 27, to the rear of the clip slot. The c is in a circle. I have seen that mark on a known Mauser 98. There are a couple of assemblers marka ot the root of the bolt handle. I will try and get a closeup of them.
Thanks Sarge. |

I agree with K75RT--it is probably a Vz-24. CZ used a logo of a z within a circle. I have a c.1950 Duo Pistol with that exact logo in the grip.

I agree that it sounds like a VZ-24. The dual sling swivels alone would point in that direction. Apparently someone, for some reason, removed the markings.
As is, it has no value other than as a shooter. Jim |

There is the Yugo M48BO ( BO = "bez oznake" = without markings )
Other than a couple of serial numbers these rifles have no stamps. |

Most likely a VZ-24, if it is void of any markings on the left receiver rail, and top of the receiver ring, it was either made like that, or scrubbed for sale to another country.
Pics will save a thousand words typed. ![]() |

I would call it a mixmaster. The bolt is obviously wrong, plus the band has provision for a side sling swivel but the buttstock does not have the throughbolt for the corresponding one. The front sight appears to be from a Model 98AZ carbine. I might suggest one of the many rifles reworked by Turkey, but in general those were marked.
While there is a lot of nonsense about "scrubbed" rifles, they do exist and that one appears to be about as scrubbed as it can get. Who did the work and why is AFAIK unknown. Jim |

It's a mixmaster alright.
Scrubbed, 8mm, and the front sight say Radom WZ 29 scrubbed for Spain. Maybe a Belgian 1935 if it was 7.65mm. The Z in a circle throws a kink in it. Got a better pic of the bayo lug? The one on the 1935 is different from the other 98 style Mausers. Edit...Just re-read and saw C in a circle....It's a 1935 Belgian........no idea why it's scrubbed..............it may have been for the Greek contract. Thanks for the info, but I have another question,if I may. You state that the bolt is wrong however the bolt, barrel, and reciever all have the ssme number.
I am in agreement that it has some strange things about it, but couldn't it just be the stock that is wrong? Sarge |

Absolutely possible, the stock could be a replacement and the entire barrelled action could have come from another stock...

Here is a couple of pics that address a comment or two. Sarge
P.S The one of the butt shows the only mark on the stock that I see. |
