Default Savage 300 99E

I have my dads savage lever action and I love the rifle shoots great and gets a lot of attention wherever I go.
I cannot find rounds to practice with at a decent price, so I was thinking of selling and getting a 30.06 or 7mm as those rounds are easy to get and less expensive.
Does the 7mm and the 30.06 perform as well as the 300 99E?

Thanks.

I know what you mean about the price of factory .300 sav. ammo ($26 -$ 29 a box). I have an early 1960s Rem 760 pump in .300 sav and it shoots great too. I reload for it so I've negated the over the counter purchase price.

You may find this odd but; I would not recommend that you sell your accurate 99E and here's why I say this; The "E" model is an enconomy model with a birch stock with no 'extra frills' and therefore it will not command the same selling price as the other model 99s in .300 savage. But because it is in .300 sav it is a plus and a 'good shooter' in good or better shape too you could expect to sell it for between $400- $500. Whereas the non "E" model
99s in .300 sav will go for $600 and higher depending on the model, caliber, condition and numbers produced vs demand...........and also how badly the prospective buyer wants you weapon.

If you sell your 99E for say $450 that still leaves you approximately $200-$300 plus dollars short of a new 7mm or 3006, unless you opt to purchase a used or new entry level rifle such as the Savage, Stevens, Marlin XL series or the Weatherby Vandguard or Tikka Lite offerings (which likely are not available in a standard 7mm).

With this in mind, keeping your .300 sav. and investing in a reloading kit may be a better option, especially since yours is a great shooter and selling it may not provide you with the necessarily cash to purchase a another rifle without 'kicking in' more money.

I also have a Savge 99E. Mines' in .308 caliber, a good shooter too, and I would never considering selling because: It was my dad's deer rifle and it has too much sentimental value and too many shared memories for me to sell it. If I ever did sell it I realize it would be a mistake.

I would urge you to look at other alternatives rather than selling your 99E ..........it's real value is that it's a family heirloom.

.... Keep it and invest in a reloading kit.

.... Keep it and purchase one the many entry level rifles in 3006, 308, or a
7mm-08 for about $300+ dollars...........they're good shooters too.

.... Keep it and buy a 22/22 magnum, a good one can be had for around
$250 and less, the ammo is inexpensive which would enable to shoot it very
frequently at a low cost. This would allow you to shoot often to
maintain your shooting proficiency plus lower your yearly ammo costs and
not feel the impact of buying a couple of boxes of .300 sav ammo for
preseason confirmation of zero and hunting practice.

The 7mm & 3006 will produce more velocity and energy than the .300 savage and therefore their maximum point blank ranges are greater also. Without getting too technical, the differences in accuracy of calibers generally boils down to the type of weapon/action, type of ammunition used, and the shooter's consistent application of the correct firing tecniques

Good luck, I hope you find this info useful and also more opinions from our forum members.
