9mm 1911 vs .45 1911???

Are there complications with 9mm on the 1911 platform, or is it just a matter of personal preference?

i'd much rather a .45 in a do or die situation than a 9mm ..

i do miss my .45 so make do with .40 S&W that i load myself (HOT)

.45 is illegal here ...

sorry i meant to add on that this would be in a competition setting not as a carry arm, or defense gun.

i've seen a kimber 1911 in 9mm here take out many competitions against very expencive target pistols , again its the user of the weapons as the biggest factor , not the weapon it's self , nearly every decent weapon will outshoot the shooter if you get my meaning

1911 is a good platform , better than most

rugged reliable and accurate

get a decent name one and i think you should have no worries

maybe a port and polish with a brand new one or lots of practice and cleaning

the same effect happens with both

I'd say it's personal preference.

In a practical use, I'd prefer a .45. More stopping power and .45ACP - according to most people I've talked to - is a more accurate round than 9mm.

i dont think the 45 is more accurate than the 9mm. the beretta 92 is very accurate. i think it depends more on the platform.

i dont see anything wrong with a 9mm 1911 for competition. in fact, my wife wants a 9mm 1911 with a commander size slide on an officer frame for defense, she is afraid of the 45

the 1911 was designed around the .45ACP and then modified to function with other cartridges. So naturally the platform works best with the .45. There are some good 9 mils out there built on the 1911 platform but they are usually very expensive. RIA makes a decent one on the low end of the cost chart just so you know

i have a 9mm colt and a 38 super colt and as for reliability it's the same for both calibers vs. the 45 . and they both shoot to point of aim the same as a 45 too.....

Its a matter of what you used to but consider this, most 1911 and 2011 race guns are 9mm or 9mm major. The reason behind it is the the 9mm is more controllable and is faster at reacquisition of a target. I shoot in bowling pin competitions every now and then. People shoot everything from .22 to 45. Its usually the 9's or the 40's that win only because they still have some knockdown even if its not a dead center hit on a pin and its faster to get back on target with.

I have two RIA 1911s, one in .45 and one in 9mm. They both function perfectly and both of them shoot a little high right. There is no difference in appearance, and as already said, it is just personal preference is what you choose.

BTW, I got the 9mm from Centerfire Systems for about $390 shipped to my FFL dealer.

I have both. Hadn't shot any 9mm in 20 years and stumbled on the opportunity to buy a 1911 9mm a couple months ago. It is great.
None of my guns have ramped barrels. Reminton GS shoots in anything with Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags, and MecGars in the 9mm.

I carry 45 24/7.
Having come through situations that ANY gun of ANY caliber would have been worth $20,000 at the time,
I say shoot the biggest thing that you can shoot well in stressful situations.

It must go bang every time, and you must hit your target.

Any average shooter can have better target hit with 9mm than .45ACP at 15+ yards. Less stopping power, yes. More accuracy under different conditions, definitely 9mm. If you are good with the .45ACP and quite got it tamed go for it.

I like them both. My full size TRP Operator shoots great and feels good in my hand and my EMP shoots great and also fits my hand. The TRP is too big for me to carry in hot SW Florida but thre emp fits in my pocket just fine, and it is a 1911. In winter months when I have to wear a jacket or my Patriots Hoody, I can carry any gun I own.

The latest caliber or gear is no substitute for experience and skill. Rifles and cartridges don't make hits -- shooters do. Fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!
