suggestons on where to acquire WWII items - The Firearms Forum

Hi folks I am new to all this and was wondering if anyone has suggestions on the best places to find authentic WWII M1911 and M1 Garand rifles... I imagine local gun shows are one place. But are there special one or places that might be better sources? Are there good online sites or forums, etc. My dad was in WWII and served in the European Theatre of Ops. I am collecting as much info I can about the 90th div and his regiment/company. I figured no collection would be complete without a firearm from that time.

There were thousands of M-1 Garands and Carbines headed back to the US from South Korea recently, but the Obama administration stopped the sale.

I would look at gun stores that sell used rifles. My local gunstore has 3 for sale. They aren't cheap. Most run $890 to $1000 dollars for and M-1 Garand, I would bet that the carbine is pricey also.

Here is an organization that refurbishes them and sells them to the public cheaper, but you must qualify to be part of this program.

I hate to say this, but check the obituary column in your local paper. There are veterans passing on everyday.Or estate sales. You would not believe what people have in their homes and have no idea what they have. I myself am a veteran and have some ''interesting things'' too,both US and Iraqi.

If you can meet the requirements, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (www.thecmp.org) offers M1 rifles at excellent prices, and you can be assured of getting an authentic military rifle, not a parts gun put together in some guy's garage.

The M1911 pistol will need to come from elsewhere as CMP does not offer pistols. Check out your local gun shows but first do some price and condition research on auction sites such as www.Auctionarms.com
