Go with a 7MM/08. Nicest shooting little gun with plenty
of Zonk.

I don't own a Marlin XL/XS series bolt action rifle but I have shot one more than a few times on a range I frequent. It was a .308 caliber and liked the way it shot for me. I liked the way it was balanced, the ease at which it came to the shoulder, plus the way the action cycled. It has an adjustable trigger named the Pro Fire which is user adjustable to 2.5 lbs. The stock is a pillar bedded and is offered in walnut or a black or camo synthetic. It's offered in several long and short action calibers, and 7mm-08 is one of the offerings. Here are some info links on the Marlin X series rifles.

Hope you find this info useful.

The .243 Win or 6mm Rem are fine as deer takers, I taken several Whitetail and Muleys with the 6mm Rem. The heavier bullets by the major manufacturers do well on retention and expansion, and my particular Ruger shoots the lighter bullets slightly higher but dead on windage wise, so I can shoot coyotes without too much pelt damage.
I'm a big fan of the 6mms, my first centerfire rifle cartridge.

A little less "ow"; but it all depends on the weight of the cartridge.

A 30/06 shooting a 180 gr. has about the same "ow" as a .280 (7mm) pushing out a 165 gr.

Keeping all factory loads; the 30/06 shooting a 220 gr cartridge definately has more "ow" than the .280.

Balistics tables.

Bottom line:
Only your shoulder knows. These guys are pretty close.

My personal favorite is the .270 Winchester. All kinds of factory loads for different scenerios. The"ow" is manageable.

I use a .280 rem., a stainless Ruger 77, with a Bell & Carlson carbalite stock and a Leupold VX III 4.5x14 scope for deer, its probably my favorite rifle, i wouldnt take any thing for it. I have a .270, a .243, three 30-06s, three .223s, a 22-250, a 25-06,a .338 win. mag., two 300 ultra mags., a .260, a 45-70, a .284, and a 30 gibbs. When it comes deer season i grab my trusty 280.

If you want to go smaller with less recoil then a 308 is not much different than a 30-06. If you really want to notice a difference then go 7mm-08, or 25-06, or even the 243 and Rem 6mm.

I always loved my 30-06. I have degenerative dics desease now and the doc said I had to give it up. I went down to the, .243 and fell in love all over again. With correct bullet placement, it knocks the snot out of a whitetail. Lastweek I killed a big 10 pt. 204 lbs. One shot to the lungs. He only went 30 yards and dropped dead. Right now I'm loading, SierraGameKing 85gr. BTHP w/ 40grs. IMR 4064. The deer rarely go more than, 25-30 yards.
