Default One down......

A doe that is. Shot a nice mature doe Sunday @ 35 yards with my bow while stalk/still hunting. I got it quartered up and cooling in the refrigerator and will begin processing the back straps and scraps tonight. I should have it all done, or near done by Sunday as I will be splitting time in the woods Saturday and Sunday looking for another.

Number two is down.

Shot another doe yesterday morning @ 25 yards with my bow still/stalk hunting. Wasn't sure if I was going to be able to recover the deer since it ran and expired onto private property, but luckily the homowner was out and about on his property and after a brief exchange escorted me to the deer.

#3 for the year is down. Shot a 6 point opening morning during Ohio’s gun week with my muzzleloader. Unfortunately I did not see another deer the rest of the week.

Ran thickets for my brother in law for two days trying to get him a deer with no luck; he saw deer, but for whatever reason, too far, too thick, too fast, he never pulled the trigger.

Then hunted half days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and worked on processing the buck from Monday the other half of those days. Another gun weekend is around the corner here in Ohio on the 18th and 19th of December and muzzleloader is in January, so I should be able to pick up one or two more does before it is all said and done.

Congrat's on that! I should have taken my oppertunity the first morning with 1 of 3 does but was holding out, and that left me with ZERO! Seems the deer were holding tite right in the thickest of thick even on the 1st day around here. I think this was the first year in a while that Ive seen them do that even on the first morning.
But as you said Roadkil, still plenty of time left, and plan to hit the 18th and 19th hard around here.

Zane you are right on them holding tight this year. I figured there was still rutting activity going on as we saw many fresh scrapes in the thickets. The scrapes located in open woods were not being worked, but the ones in the thickets sure were.

We jumped up plenty in the thick stuff, but either it was too thick to get a shot, or you just caught tails moving through the thickets on a dead run. In years past even after opening morning you could catch them moving from feeding areas to bedding areas in the morning, but outside of the buck I shot on opening day, if you wanted a deer you had to stomp through the thick stuff.

Just about everyone Ive talked to around here have said about the same as you and I. And it was a tough week (from what others have said as well). One thing I have noticed over the coarse of the late fall, was that "most" of the deer were spending alot of time in the "woods" rather then in the open fields. I'm thinking it may have had a lot to do with all the acorns this year. Down this way, they were so thick, it was like walking on marbles anywhere there was oaks. Just like at the two feeders I have set up, nothing has been around them, well except every now and then, but nothing compared to last year. As far as the rut around here, it did seem to tapper off a bit there during gun season, or towards the end of it. I didnt see many fresh scrapes from about tuesday on...dont know...

Number 4 was taken this past Saturday @ 1:50 P.M. Shot her with my muzzleloader @ 120 yards. She walked about 60 yards after I pulled the trigger and I watched her through my scope bed down. Thought I missed her, but as I watched her through the scope she flopped over ten minuets later and slid down the side of the hill.

Before she came along I watched 4 bucks come down the side of the hill earlier in the day @ 70 yards and each one was bigger than the first; a four pointer, a six pointer, a really nice 8 point with tall tines, and finally a huge wide 12 point. Since I shot my buck already all I could do was watch; still nice to know that they make it to next year.
