marlin golden 39a mountie

I just inherited a 39a.Its in very good shape.But was wondering about the year of its production.The serial # IS W773.There is a small wear spot on serial # hope one # is not gone.Would like to know age.

W prefix means it was made in 1963.

The "GOLDEN 39A MOUNTIE" was Mfg. 1957-1972.

Ok, first, download the manual, if you haven't already.
Marlin has it, as well as Steve's Pages 7b.

Next, with manual open, take it apart per the instructions.
Doing otherwise can cause issues for your rifle...

Clean everything and inspect the action. Take a few pics of the guts as you take 'em apart
and post 'em, we'll look and see if we see anything funky.

Re-assemble per the instructions...doing otherwise can cause Issues...

Hopefully, someone just put the leaf spring in wrong...or it's totaly worn out.
Or the hammer might be misaligned/worn out.
Ya never know till ya get it apart...

Fortunately, they're pretty easy to figure out once you've got 'em apart.

I have all of them from 1948 to 1960. But none of my service manuals go past 1969.

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

thanks for the help.Looks like hammer is worn at the point where the groove is for the fire lock position.I broke it down and cleaned really clean though.I thought i would replace parts really easy to take apart and reassemble.But only snag is marlin owners manual has parts but looks like a newer model,also they indicate that the parts i need will have to be shipped to gunsmith.

This is not true. Its not the law, but if you do buy a new hammer, it will need to be fitted so all cycles properly. If your in Ohio, I can do it for you, and maybe even save your old hammer, by re-cutting the notch. If you need help finding parts or working on this yourself, just PM me.

PM me. I can give you better places to call for parts. Now that Marlin is owned by Remington, they are harder to get certain parts from. Marlin used to send out the bullseyes that go in the butt stock for free. Now that Remington owns them, you have to buy them.

I bought a used 39 that would not fire if muzzle was elevated. I shipped it to Marlin and they repaired it at no charge

That would have been a broken firing pin probably. How long ago did you do this? I know one guy who bought a new 39AS, and has had problems with it. I tried to get him to send it to me, but he sent it to Marlin, they said they fixed it, he got it back, same issue. He sent it back three times, and never got it fixed. They are now refunding his money under the Lemon Law. The guns are now being worked on by Remingtons gunsmiths, which are not totally proficient with the workings of the marlin lever guns.

Not neccesarily a Gunsmith...but any FFL holder

If you have a C&R FFL type 03, you ARE an FFL and can receive specialized gun parts.

hey folks thanks for all the help and advise on my little mountie.Repaired notch in hammer.Took gun out for test drive shoots great.Installed new scope on her simmons 4x 32.Just gotta shoot her some more and give her a name.Also have model 60 marlin which i have agood time shooting.Will keep in touch about my little shooters

Have a look at the date codes above again.

I didn't post the correct codes. I couldn't find mine on my computer at the time and copied and pasted from another forum. Turns out it had a few mistakes that I didn't notice until you asked about the T prefix.

It's correct now but not a complete list, but I did provided a link to a complete list above.

Folks, while we are discussing Marlin 39's, can anyone tell me how to do a trigger job on a 39m? It is a 1974 or 75 and has a trigger that must be 10lbs. Any help will be appreciated.

I have owned a Marlin Golden 39A Mountie for a long time but cannot remember when I bought it. The Serial # is A028973. I really need two things. I would really like to know the year it was made and I am in desperate need of another stock for it. It is the tpye of stock without the pistol grip. Can anyone help?
