ok i take it from the way the question is posed that you are not that familiar with the subject ( if wrong and its me who dont get the question please say so eh)
used , clear enough .. civil war Musket reproduction, this is confusing do you wish a reproduction that fires , or just a wall hanger ? one that fires i've noted the past few months the new prices have come down while used have stayed up ( just my own opinion) if you actually after a real civil war musket the better antique houses that have a specialist firearms dealer or in house expert may be the way to go reproduction , try looking at a new one from Dixie gun works or Cabela's the price may surprise you compared with used used repo, try that US gun auction site and its competitors , Cabela's may have some on consignement ( but not cheaply) , or a want ad here good luck eh |

The best place to check is at a Black Powder Rondy. The next best place is at a gun show. You can often get a real deal at gun shows. Most of the folks that attend gun shows are not interested in Perc. weapons. If you don't know how to inspect used black powder firearms get some one who does.

also check/google to find civil war talk forums & authentic campaigner web site. these all have classified sections.
every so often you will see military longs arms for sale at traditional muzzleloaders.com all the auction sites have a blackpowder section too. good luck S.M. Last edited by sewerman; 02-11-2011 at 07:30 PM.. Reason: typo |

decide what period/year you will be portraying and what army.
then what region, western , trans-mississippi, or eastern. that will narrow it down a bit to your choices. western armies, federal early war: 1842 smoothbore musket, lorenz european musket, 1841 mississippi rifles, caplock conversions from state miliita armories. confederate western armies, same as above with some flinlocks & grandpap's squirrel gun & even a few shotguns. some ohio units carried 1842 till just before the closing battles. though not accepted in main stream re-enacting the two band musket was used extensively in the western region. also enfields eventually both sides. pretty much ditto for the east till early 1862. then a general issue of 1853 and 1858 enfields for the south with a mixture of 1842, & 1861 springfields from battle field pick /up & state militias & southern clones rifles. the north imported about 250-300K enfields during the early war but pretty much standardized to the 1861 model springfield mid war. trans mississippi the forgotten war...used about any firearm they could get. this is just a general guide line to help you along & inspire you to investigate ...& if you already knew all this then,....good luck with your hobby! p.s. this just covers the most popular rank & file infantry weapons.S.M.
