Im new to .22's - The Firearms Forum

Hello everone im new to this forum

Im getting ready to get a new gun because of tax season. I have a combat shotgun now but I want something else for the 25 yard range I go too. I was looking at some .22's but I really dont know what to get. At first I thought of a 10/22 but their is different things you want to get for it to make it more accurate and good such as a better trigger and barrel. I was looking at remingtons 597 VTR's but I dont know if they are actully good or not. I just want something with good accuracy and durable right out of the box. I have a $550 budget. Thanks!

I'm new here too and spent several weeks reading up about various .22 rifles. I ended up getting a Ruger 10/22 Carbine for me and Ruger 10/22 distributor special pink stock version for my wife. My goal was short range plinking and target shooting. We love them so far.

with that budget you look at: cz 455, savage mark 2 series, and marlin 900 series...maybe henry's if you dig lever actions...

You will be able to do more with a Ruger 10/22 as far as upgrades. I love the 10/22 platform but I do not own one. We have a Remington 597 that I shoot and a Mossberg 702 tactical plinkster for the kids. They are a little cheaper, but harder to do upgrades like triggers, barrels, stocks, etc........but I am satisfied with what I have. It will be interesting what they guys and gals on here will recommend.

BTW I love my Remington 597.

heck that budget will get you a Browning Tbolt target rifle. Just shop for what fits you and your liking.

Pretty much anything from any of the major american firms are good. for .22 LR I love Marlin 60s, for magnums I like the rugers and the Brownings.

I have a Zastava made imported by Remington, Model 5 .22LR that will shoot bug holes at 50 yds.

550 is a good budget for a .22 and will most likely get you a .22 AND a scope.

another tip, is to shop used. Lots of times you can find a steal at pawnshops. Thats where i netted the model 5 mounted with a Bushnell banner and steel rings for 200 bucks out the door!

I love my 10/22. It has good accuracy, its durable, and fun to shoot. I'm looking for something thats super accurate and according to the advise I've received, the CZ 455 looks like the real deal. I also love leaver actions and the Marlin 39a has caught my eye. Its a really sweet piece but I still researching as well.

I picked up my 10/22 about 4 years ago when you could still get them for $165. Worth every penny of that and would be worth the price tag today in my book.

I faced a similar situation a couple of years ago. Researched and looked at what was available around town. I wound up getting a Savage MK II BTVS - I have never regretted it. It's a fine gun - great shooter (much better than I am). It was $330 at the local CAL Ranch store.

Ive owned a 10/22 and a Marlin 60 some years ago and loved them both!
The 10/22 I put to the test and it was a great .22LR! The Marlin I never really put to the test as far as on paper, but never had a problem with it taking out tree rats at all! I miss both of those .22's, BAD! (and have yet to replace either of them)

You should do a lot of reading over at rimfire central. There's a separate forum for each type of .22 rimfire, so you can see what people like and dislike; what kind of problems they have; etc...
I have 3 different 10/.22's, and between them, they do everything that I expect from the many different iterations of the basic cartridge. I doesn't make sense to me to shoot any other type of .22 rifle.

Whittakers had the CZ 455 on sale for $299 but they sold out. Any of the CZ's(452 453 455) would be a great choice and can be found for your budget.

The latest caliber or gear is no substitute for experience and skill. Rifles and cartridges don't make hits -- shooters do. Fact of life: After Monday and Tuesday, even the calendar says WTF!
